Useless information #83 - Going back to the future got more expensive than expected.
Back to the future is one of those movies (trilogy) that once you watched it you can't imagine any other actors in the world performing it.
However... the movie industry is complicated and many times things don't go as planned. In this case, hard decisions had to be made regarding the leading actor when the filming was already taking place.
That's right. Try to picture a Marty FcFly other than Michael J. Fox.
The first choice was... well Michael J. Fox, but he was busy at the time. So the first Marty FcFly was indeed Eric Stoltz.
The director Robert Zemeckis decided Eric was not right for the role and finally was able to hire Michael J. Fox. Scenes had to be re-filmed, some time was lost and the budget increased by $3 million according to some sources and $4 million according to others.
Whatever the figures were, it was not cheap but it was worth it!
There's a very interesting documental series on Netflix, The movies that made us, that unveils the history behind many relevant movies. Back to the future is one of them.
