All Aboard The Spirit Of Tasmania!!

avatar

It's funny how many people ask about where Tasmania is, not realising Australia has a large island state across the Bass Strait from the mainland.

The Spirit of Australia ferry takes about 10 hours, and you can choose a day or night crossing. We chose day as it's quite nice relaxing and reading on board and I don't think I'd sleep well anyway. Besides, it's cheaper. All told it cost us $1000 return for the two of us and our vehicle.

As you queue, they come check for any fresh fruit, vegetables or fish. It was a bit annoying waiting as the Landrover does not like idling in traffic and the engine was threatening to overheat. Old cars are not meant to sit in traffic!! Actually nor am I.. I was busting for a wee. It takes quite some time to queue.

From there, you proceed to the Cruise Terminal where they check your tickets. We were told they would check our vaccination status and QR code for the eTicket that must be filled out pre boarding but no one did. No need to even show proof of RAT. The RAT availability has been a absolute disaster in Australia and there's barely availability as it is. People have been really angry at how the government has handled it.

On board the ferry there is a cafe and a small tourist shop. It was hard to find a seat that wasn't under a TV and I didn't want the mainstream news blaring at me the whole time. We managed to find some seats and a bench as I intended to have a sleep after a sleepless night the day before!! There's plenty of nice seating areas, but for your pick you would want to get there three hours before check in, ha!

We actually packed lunch and snacks as we didn't want to eat expensive ferry food and thought we would save out cash for coffees!

However, there is a buffet with muuesli, bacon sandwiches and the like.

It was a beautiful sunny day leaving Port Melbourne. Honestly we breathed a sigh of relief to be leaving. It's not easy to do in these COVID times and a lot of people too anxious to travel.

We spent the day lounging, reading and walking around the various decks. All in all, a lovely experience, if a long day.

I always look out for the cereal jar whenever I take I trip lol, they're my favorite. And as for the sea or water bodies, we're not friends because I get sea sick quickly I wish I could help it lol. However I love your narration and photos attached to it.

Oh I got seasick!! I wrapped up the post to schedule before that part of the trip. The staff gave me a ginger soda and a cup of ice which helped, as well as moving to centre of ship where it moves up and down with the waves less! Luckily it was only the last few hours!

There is a lot of noise made around travelling, but when you actually travel you will see it is not so tedious as it sounds, yes too many pre travel formalities. Good you had smooth travels.

I entirely agree! It's harder planning and packing and worrying than DOING. That's why I always persevere x

When I used to travel .... way back when ... I was amazed at how many people would ask "But WHERE in Africa do you live?" every time I said I am from South Africa. So. Tasmania? I hear you. AND I know where it is. Your photos bring back memories. Again of my life overseas. When I lived in the UK I would hop on the ferry, car and all, to pop into Europe for a long weekend. Now I think I'm like you and your Landrover. Wait in a queue? I don't think so

Oh, I miss living in the UK for those easy trips to Europe. Remind me where in UK you lived?

I hope this new adventure goes very well, that you get to know many places, people, customs and good things. A big big hug @riverflows.

Bring one of those universal remote controls and turn the damn thing off. Or do like myself, unplug the damn TV. I hate when I go to places and they have a TV on (and it's generally news outlets).

No need to even show proof of RAT. The RAT availability has been a absolute disaster in Australia and there's barely availability as it is.

Are RATs allowed in Tasmania? In all honesty, I don't even know what it stands for and I doubt I want to know ;<)

I missed out on your travel plans but I am happy to hear about it and plan to read up soonish.
It's just that I have a lot on my mind ( as per usual but this time something new for me )

Big hug!
