Fiction: The enchanted ring (El anillo encantado) [EN/ES]
The enchanted ring
A war without quarter was taking place, while the sunset fell over the valley, witness of the cruel battle. After several hours of combat, there was no clear winner, and the warriors continued to fall into the night, which painted the sky with stars with a beautiful moon.
Under the full moon stood a priest of the Toyac clan, his name was the Shadow, and in his hands, he held a ring of millenary power. An object that had the power to decide the battle. The Shadow raised his hands towards the full moon and invoked the power of the ring.
The golden ring was beginning to glow brightly becoming charged with lunar rays. "Anuk, the Shadow has the ring. We must do something or its power will destroy our clan." A warrior of the Huayo clan was warning the leader impatiently.
"Don't worry, Istok. I will take advantage of him and go as quickly as possible to prevent the Shadow from unleashing the power of the ring." Resolutely Anuk would grab his spear and run towards the Shadow.
Anuk was running as fast as he could, his big muscular legs gave him strength and speed, and with his arms that looked like sledgehammers, he was making his way through the warriors of the Toyak clan. Meanwhile, the ring continued to shine more brightly, and the Shadow continued to utter unintelligible words. Time was pressing, and Anuk had to accomplish his goal. He would not allow what happened months ago in his kingdom to happen again.
The warrior Anuk remembered that fateful night when the Toyac took the inhabitants of the kingdom by surprise and there was a terrible confrontation. After the Toyac retreated, the Shadow came out with the mighty ring and in the moonlight invoked its power. An incandescent light bathed the entire field, destroying everything in its path. The kingdom was destroyed and reduced to ashes.
Anuk and the Huayos arrived at the kingdom at dawn and saw only devastation. The eyes of the warriors bled salty tears at the sight of the apocalyptic panorama. They did not know what had happened, but as they searched the whole place they found a badly wounded man. Anuk approached him and asked, "good man, what has happened here?"
The man told all that had happened to Anuk and the warriors, then between sobs, he said to them, "oh, Great Anuk! You have in your hands the duty to avenge our people. Our spirits will be with you and your warriors helping them in this great crusade. May our god of war bless you and yours." After these words, the man passed away in Anuk's arms.
The great warrior shouted into the air, promising man the destruction of the Toyac. Anuk stood up and addressed his warriors, "Huayos, behold our destiny. The vengeance of our people lies in our hands. We will gladly give our lives for the memory of our fathers, women, children, and elders." Anuk raised his arms to the sky with effervescent melancholy. "Revenge, revenge..."
"Vengeance, vengeance, vengeance!" cried the Huayos warriors.
Anuk was coming back from his memories and focused on his great mission, the ring. Fiercely Anuk was approaching where the Shadow was standing, who was still summoning the power of the ring. The Huayo warrior had to reach the top of that small mountain. Fatigue was taking its toll on his strength, but he continued regardless.
Meanwhile, the Shadow waited impatiently for the ring to deploy its full power on the enemies. "Damn it, why is it taking so long to recharge this ring. That warrior coming this way must be stopped. Kill him!"
The Toyac warriors rushed down the mountain to confront Anuk. A confrontation ensued between the warriors and Anuk, who flooded with adrenaline, was making his way through the Toyac. Anuk's determination was pouring from every pore of his cinnamon skin, and the fire of vengeance could be seen in his brown eyes.
One by one the Toyac who protected the Shadow were defeated. After a while, Anuk was face to face with the Shadow. "You are mine now, I will not forgive you for what you did to my people."
"Back off, you foolish warrior. Do you not see that I hold the power of the entire universe in my hands? Right now I will disintegrate you down with my mighty ring."
"I am not afraid. I have come to offer my life for the vengeance of my people." Anuk swung his sword cutting through the night air. "Prepare to die."
The warrior Anuk rushed at the Shadow, and the combat began. The priest was running in panic and throwing a few bolts of energy, wanting to make time for the ring to be fully charged.
Anuk received an energy bolt in his leg and fell with a crash. The Shadow laughed thunderously, as he watched as the ring had completed its charge. "I don't have to wait any longer. The destruction of your clan will be complete. Now watch as I fulminate the last Huayos. Haha."
The Shadow raised his hand with the ring, and an intense light began to unfold from the ring. At that instant, Anuk grabbed a spear from the ground and threw it at the Shadow's hand, the Shadow screamed in pain as the lightning bolts went in different directions. Anuk got up and with his last strength pushed the Shadow towards the precipice.
The priest fell and his deafening screams invaded the place, while the lightning illuminated the fall, then an explosion of lights and energy filled the night horizon. The Huayos had won and were able to rebuild their kingdom from the hands of the great Anuk.
After a few years, mysterious men in metallic armor arrived in the Huayos' kingdom. "Commander, look at this strange ring we found, it shines like the sun itself."
The end
«No te preocupes, Istok.
«No tengo miedo. «Prepárate a morir».

¡Thanks for you reading!
Now I wonder if the mysterious men would know just how powerful the ring was or if they'd treat it as just ...a ring.
Thank you for stopping by and leaving your kind comment. I like to leave that ending open so that the reader can imagine what would happen and who knows, maybe someone will be encouraged to continue the story.
Happy day.
The mythic voice of the narrator works well for a story about the pre-Columbian era. Internecine battles between peoples were devastating. However, with the coming of the "mysterious men in metallic armor", a more profound catastrophe will befall all the people.
Your description of the struggle between Anuk and Shadow is riveting. There are no heroes in this struggle. While Shadow seeks to annihilate the enemy, Anuk is motivated by vengeance.
Your arc is very good. You establish the conflict and build to a moment of crisis. The resolution is not only satisfying, but startling.
Great adventure story. The theme of a magical ring may be familiar, but you cast that theme in an original light. Thank you for sharing this with us, @rinconpoetico7.
Wow! This wonderful comment you have had for the story makes me happy. When I read about the subject, a fantasy story mixed with the pre-Columbian era immediately came to mind. I really enjoyed writing the story.
A happy day @theinkwell
What a great story full of action and emotions. A fight where good wins. I liked the ending because it leaves open the possibility of what may happen in the future if they discover the power of the ring.
Thank you for sharing your story.
