Community Pets | Dwellers of the Streets & Friends of the City [ENG/ESP]

[ENG] I send a big hello to the entire Hive Pets community! Today I want to share some photographs that I have taken in recent weeks around the city where I live, San Antonio de los Altos, Miranda, Venezuela. In this place there are many dogs and cats that live on the streets, the community has adopted them, they take care of them and feed them, although they do not live in a house, and legally nobody guards them, they are part of the urban scene, friends of the city.

¡Le envío un gran saludo a toda la comunidad de Hive Pets! Hoy quiero compartir algunas fotografías que he realizado en las últimas semanas por la ciudad en donde vivo, San Antonio de los Altos, Miranda, Venezuela. En este lugar hay bastantes perros y gatos que viven en las calles, la comunidad los ha adoptado, les cuidan y alimentan, aunque no viven en una casa, y legalmente nadie los custodia, ellos forman parte de la escena urbana, amigos de la ciudad.

[ENG] Cities are habitats to which few animals can adapt, huge tracts of land with paved roads, vehicle traffic, little vegetation and where the means of obtaining food are somewhat systematized. However, when I go out to the streets I always meet many of these friends, then I can observe that people feed them, name them, take care of them, clean them and love them, with a sense of compassion and community.

[ESP] Las ciudades son hábitats al que pocos animales pueden adaptarse, enormes extensiones de terreno con caminos asfaltados, circulación de vehículos, escasa vegetación y en donde los medios de obtención de alimentos son algo sistematizado. Sin embargo, cuando salgo a la calle siempre me encuentro con muchos de estos amigos, entonces puedo observar que la gente los alimenta, los nombra, los cuida, los limpia y se encariñan, con sentido de compasión y de comunidad.

[ENG] In the history between humans and dogs, these have served us as protection and a warning signal, since thanks to their smell and hearing they can perceive when another animal approaches, some also developed other skills such as hunting. Today, there are police dogs, guide dogs, watchdogs and caretakers, competitors dogs and so on, but these street dogs sometimes don't have those skills to offer and still survive, it's because people appreciate them. As this little friend who is pregnant, I have no doubt that the community will support her and her puppies.

[ESP] En la historia entre los humanos y los perros, estos nos han servido de protección y señal de alerta, ya que gracias a su olfato y oído pueden percibir cuando otro animal se acerca, también algunos desarrollaron otras habilidades como para la caza. Hoy en día, hay perros policías, perros guías, vigilantes y cuidadores, perros que compiten y demás, pero estos perros que viven en la calle a veces no tienen esas habilidades que ofrecer y aun así sobreviven, es porque la gente los aprecia. Como esta pequeña amiga que está encinta, no tengo duda de que la comunidad la apoyará y también a sus cachorros.

[ENG] It is fun to see how in each urbanization of this city small herds arise, sometimes they are grouped around the markets and butchers, surely guided by smell and appetite, they tend to stay and live in a single sector, where people already recognizes them.

[ESP] Es divertido ver como en cada urbanización de esta ciudad surgen pequeñas manadas, a veces se agrupan alrededor de los mercados y las carnicerías, seguramente guiados por el olfato y el apetito, suelen permanecer y hacer vida en un solo sector, donde ya la gente los reconoce.

[ENG] Some of them are territorial and alert when there is a strange visitor, but they still remain friendly, I think that if they were not like that they would not survive, in fact, I believe that it is docility and tenderness that allows them to live among humans.

[ESP] Algunos de ellos son territoriales y alertan cuando hay un visitante extraño, pero aun permanecen amigables, creo que si no fueran así no sobrevivirían, de hecho, creo que es la docilidad y la ternura lo que les permite vivir entre los humanos.

[ENG] This friend seemed to be watching me a bit, maybe he didn't like to be pointed by the camera, but it was funny, it can be seen that people take good care of him, he's healthy and clean, I found him in the plaza of a shopping center that is 20 minutes walking from my home.

[ESP] Este amigo parecía que me estaba vigilando un poco, quizás no le gustaba mucho que le apuntara con la cámara, pero era gracioso, se nota que lo cuidan bien, es sano y está limpio, lo encontré en la plaza de un centro comercial que está a 20 minutos caminando desde mi hogar.

[ENG] The last image I made was of this group of cats in a residence, the building guard made them a pot with cardboard and put food for several, an act of giving without expecting anything in return, even for a moment they are their pets .

It would be interesting to better study the dynamics of urban fauna, I imagine a documentary like the ones from National Geographic, but made in the city, so perhaps we could take better care of the animals we live with.

[ESP] La última imagen que realicé fue de este grupo de gatos en una residencia, el vigilante del edificio les hizo un pote con cartón y les puso comida a varios, un acto de dar sin esperar nada a cambio, aunque sea por un momento son sus mascotas.

Sería interesante estudiar mejor la dinámica de la fauna urbana, me imagino un documental como los de National Geographic, pero realizado en la ciudad, así quizás podríamos cuidar mejor a los animales con los que convivimos.
