Had My First Interns to Learn About Gardening!!
Hello Hivers!!
Welcome to my blog..
So over the week I received a phone call from someone who was representing an NGO. So they called me to inquire if I would be willing to accept internship from some students who want to learn about gardening,
that’s because of the ongoing strike action by the academic staff union of the universities in the country the schools are on strike and students were tired of staying at home.
So the NGOs (WAVE; West Africa Vocational Education )
is a social non governmental organization trying to help student and non-employed get busy during this strike period.
So what they try to do is to engage students in meaningful activities that will help them later on.
So I was contacted if I would be willing to accept some students who would love to learn about gardening in my in my little garden, that day they saw my profile online and decided to reach out to me.
Although they explained to me that there is no financial benefits to my end for taking up this responsibility that they were not really financially buoyant to cover such expense.
After deep thoughts I still consider taking in the interns because I see it as my own way of giving back to the society, my knowledge my experience in terms of gardening and I know it would be of benefit to the students who will be coming to learn.
so I didn’t see it as a problem. I told myself "Not everything that has to do with money".
So I told them I would only accept 5 students but out of the 5 students only 3 of them were interested and willing to learn, but 2 of them came early and one came when we were almost done for the day.
So today we had our first class, I had to take them on an introductory lecture to learn about organic vegetable productions with a PowerPoint presentation.
I took them through the various processes that is involved in the production of vegetable we have, from the pre-planting operation the planting operation and the post planting operation, told them all the organic means we use to protect our crops from insects and pests and also the various organic means to be used to fertilize our crops to get good production.
So I took them through all the processes that involves that is involved in the production of vegetables organically and it was really a fun class.
After then we went out for a little practical demonstration, so we started out with preparing a nursery with tomato seeds.

.How long have this been going? The students would really get bored with this. It's amazing the school though was able to find you and ask you to share your passion to interested young adults. Your module was also great. Having a discussion first then doing the hands-on activity. They will learn faster with the actual thing going.
You may not gain any payment for this but you can definitely use this experience in the future as references if you plan to become an agriculture teacher or something like that! 😃
The strike has been on for over 4months now and no sign of it ending anytime soon.
I hope I could use this experience in the future as a reference too..
Thanks for your comments..
This is sad for the students! Anyways, keep it up! Hopefully, more interns would join your classes!
