After in the previous post I discussed what a compressor is here, what it does and how it works, this time I will discuss what a Limiter is, its function, and how it works?

Basically, the limiter is also a compressor, and as I said earlier the limiter was still an analog device and today has been made with software. From the language, it is clear that the limiter has a limiter, meaning that it limits excessive sound signals so as to create good dynamics in a vocal, it is the same as a compressor.

But what is the difference between the limiter and the compressor?

The most notable difference between a limiter and a compressor is that a limiter does not have a knob ratio. In the discussion about the compressor, I explained that the ratio works to adjust the size of the ratio of the sound that has not been compressed and after it has been compressed.

An example of using a ratio, for example, the input size of a voice signal is 15db then used with a threshold size of 12db, now if we set the ratio at 2:1 then the output signal after being compressed is half of the compression result, which is 13.5db. See the image below using simple math.

If the compressor still has an output signal that is out of the threshold, then the limiter will have a significant cut because there is no ratio at the limiter.

In the world of music mixing, a limiter is rarely used, because music or vocal will be cut constantly, while in the world of music it requires dynamics. The limiter itself is more often used on musical equipment with the aim of limiting the sound that comes out which can cause damage to the equipment.

Sometimes a limiter does not work quickly on a very fast voice signal, which is called a quick transition response, so sometimes a signal is missed. To prevent this is a limitation of use by using a detector signal. This signal detector functions as a redundant signal transmission to be cut by the limiter.

In hive need posts about sound production.
Sometimes also some soundigenners use limiter on solo guitar in instrumental music. So that the solo guitar is loud enough and punches a tight mix, but doesn't clip.

PS: What DAW you use?

I use Fruity Loops. but right now I don't have good equipment for a music studio. it's true what you say limiter is used to limit the sound.

very sad to talk about this. I've made a music studio but there's nothing in it yet. I only make music with a headset.
