A Day in Celle - Germany

avatar

Hello friends. I want to share with you my trip to Celle, which occurred in November of last year. Celle is a small city with just one hundred and seventy thousand inhabitants. The streets of this fairytale-like city still preserve houses and other structures dating back to the Middle Ages. Famous houses can be found on every street here, each with its own history.

Celle Prison. This is where particularly dangerous criminals are held. It consists of several sections with various security levels, accommodating inmates according to different categories of crime. It is known to have been in operation since 1919.

001.jpg

These bookcases are found in many places around the city. You can take books for free, read them, and return them. You can bring your own books for others to enjoy.

And this is the local newspaper building. It serves as the headquarters for a newspaper that publishes the local news of Celle.

006.jpg

I started by visiting the old town. Here you'll find half-timbered houses surrounded by charming scenery. Since Celle wasn't bombed during World War II the city has preserved its old charm well.

007.jpg

I walked into the square. Celle is located in Lower Saxony and in the square, there is a fountain adorned with the coat of arms of Lower Saxony. The city is situated 40 km north of Hanover. Although there are many beautiful half-timbered cities in Germany, I can say none are quite like Celle.

008.jpg

Take a look at these superb buildings. Near the square, arguably the most beautiful house in Celle stands. Every week tour buses come to Celle, and people wander around here in groups. One of Germany's most beautiful Christmas markets was once held here and people used to come here during Christmas to witness this magical event. The best times to visit the city are still during the Christmas holidays. During these times, you can see the rich traditions of the communities living together in this wonderful place.

Later I moved to another square, where the church is located. The dome of Celle Castle was visible. There preparations for the Christmas market had already begun and during my visit, the market was open. I visited Celle Church. It dates back to the Middle Ages and has undergone restoration several times over the years.

After leaving the church, a wonderful view opened up right next to it.

015.jpg

016.jpg

Then I headed towards where the oldest house is located. Nowadays it is used as a shop. This house has stood since 1532. Women's clothing is sold inside, and only the beams remain inside, nothing else. I also went up to the second floor of the house and wandered around inside for a while. The restoration has been done so well that it looks rebuilt. Of course, only the exterior remains.

020.jpg

This is Celle Castle. It may not look very impressive from the outside, but once you step inside, you encounter a real castle.

021.jpg

Right next to the castle, there is a pond and a stream where you can see many animals. There are even water otters that approach people and eat the food offered to them. Since nobody harms or disturbs them, they don't fear humans. I couldn't decide whether the one I saw was a water otter or a large rat.

022.jpg

023.jpg

Various shops are located on the ground floors of these houses. As the evening falls, the houses look a bit different. They become more mysterious, just like something out of a fairy tale.

024.jpg

025.jpg

Here are the bookcases I mentioned earlier. These types of bookcases can be found in many places. Right next to them is a French garden, where the trees are planted very neatly. The garden was built in honor of the Danish king who exiled his unfaithful wife to this city.

026.jpg

027.jpg

This is what the New Town Hall looks like, with ponds and a fountain. It's truly a beautiful place.

028.jpg

I visit Celle often, but every time I come here, I am always amazed by this beautiful city. I believe that cities in Germany, like everywhere else in the world, can be divided into traditional and modern ones. Celle is a very authentic city. It's not like modern cities such as Berlin, Paris, or New York. Which would you prefer to live in, a clean, beautiful small city like this or a big, dirty city? Just look at what a beautiful place it is.

029.jpg

Celle used to be an important city in the past, and it even had royal palaces, but it lost its significance two centuries ago, leaving behind all these surrounding beauties.

030.jpg

The night view of Celle is, of course, more mysterious. The houses start to look a bit different. It's really interesting to see so much half-timbered architecture in such a small city.

031.jpg

I then returned to the square where I started my tour. Celle is a fairy tale city, extraordinary. I involuntarily compare all half-timbered cities to Celle, and Celle usually wins.
