[EN-ES] Chickens: Man's best friend / Gallinas: La mejor amiga del hombre

If you want your hen to produce good chickens, don't lay thirteen eggs, don't lay them on Tuesdays.

I feel lucky, in spite of a streak of those that rock any man's world, I have discovered in something as common and simple as a hen, hope for what is to come.

A couple of weeks ago I traded a Canary Alpine crossbred goat; Holstein, that's the name of the kid son of one of my best goats Annia, which I traded for a humble trio of hens.

Although I was offered a Gallo and a hen of the Isa Brown breed, along with a Black Rock Star, on the day of the exchange I received what in the countryside they call criollas or improved mestizas (crossing pure hens with hens known as finas to gain in hardiness).

In spite of the humble origin of my hens, I decided to put my heart into raising them in my backyard.

You may be wondering why change a kid for chickens? The reason is simple: my son loves poultry protein and secondly, it is never advisable to have too many males in goat breeding.

Anyway, next to the two hens and the rooster, I placed a Brahman crossbred hen and a pullet that my son rescued called "rice", for being raised with this humble cereal.

Finally, we completed our starter stock with an old Isa Brown hen that my mother-in-law had as a pet and Arroz's mother.

Chickens are what he called "productive pets," they can thresh the soil while they scratch, fertilize with their droppings, eliminate pests and weed in no time.

My half dozen hens and my cockerel live with a small wild boar (Baquiro) named Chácharo and an adult goat named Primo (first born in my goat herd).

On Monday the black hen stayed in the nest to start the process of hatching eggs from all of them (5 from the black hen, 4 from the little brown hen and 5 from herself).

My hens will soon multiply, and we will begin the process of vaccination and selection of the best specimens in order to have a uniform standard of birds in the middle of these three breeds through inbreeding.

It is curious that each breed of birds gives you a wink to see their crossbreeding, based on phenotypes (legs, plumage, build, egg color, etc.) and attitudes (nesting fast, avoid nesting, lay N quantity of eggs, etc.).

A hen is not as exceptional as a millenary reptile or an exotic eagle, but they are very functional and have accompanied man throughout his survival and that is why I am proud to show them and share their incorporation process in my farm soon.

All these gestures that I told you about bring a breeder and breeder closer to know when and where they lay their hens, how many eggs they lay in the nest, if they are nest hijackers or how many chicks they usually take out per cycle.

A simple gesture such as a nest in times of crisis can bring us joy, hope and purpose. Nature is the teacher that teaches you that there will always be a restart for a new stage of growth.

Si quieres que tu gallina buenos pollos saque, no le pongas trece huevos, ni la eches en martes.

Me siento con suerte, a pesar de una racha de esas que tambalean el mundo de cualquier hombre, he descubierto en algo tan común y sencillo como una gallina, esperanza de lo que está por venir.

Hace un par de semanas cambié un cabrito mestizo de la raza Canaria con Alpino; Holstein, así se llama el cabrito hijo de una de mis mejores cabras Annia, el cual cambié por un humilde trío de gallinas.

Si bien me ofrecieron un Gallo y una gallina de la raza Isa Brown, junto a una Black Rock Star, el día del trueque recibí lo que en el campo llaman criollas o mestizas mejoradas (cruce de gallinas puras con gallinas conocidas como finas para ganar en rusticidad).

A pesar de la humilde procedencia de mis gallinas, decidí ponerle corazón a la cría de las mismas en el patio de mi casa.

Quizá se pregunten ¿por qué cambiar un cabrito por gallinas? El motivo es sencillo mi hijo adora la proteina avícola y segundo nunca es recomendable tener muchos machos en la cría de cabras.

En fin, junto a las dos gallinas y el gallo, coloqué una gallina mestiza de Brahman y una pollita que rescató mi hijo llamada "arroz", por ser criada con este humilde cereal.

Finalmente, completamos nuestro plantel de arranque con una vieja gallina Isa Brown que tenía mi suegra de mascota y la mamá de Arroz.

Las gallinas son lo que llamó "mascotas productivas", pueden trillar la tierra mientras escarban, abonar con sus excretas, eliminar plagas y desmalezar en muy poco tiempo.

Mi media docena de gallinas y mi gallito, conviven con un pequeño Jabalí silvestres (Baquiro) llamado Chácharo y un Cabro Adulto llamado Primo (primer nacido en mi rebaño de cabras).

El día lunes la gallina blanca se quedó en el nido para iniciar el proceso de eclosión de los huevos de todas (5 de la gallina negra, 4 de la marrón pequeña y 5 de ella misma).

Mis gallinas pronto se multiplicarán, y empezaremos el proceso de vacuna y selección de mejores ejemplares para en medio de estas tres razas ir gracias a cruces consanguíneos tener un estándar de aves uniforme.

Es curioso que cada raza de aves te hace un guiño para ver su mestizaje, basado en fenotipos (patas,plumaje, contextura, color de los huevos, etc) y en actitudes (se anidan rápido, evitan anidar, colocan N cantidad huevos, etc).

Una gallina no es tán excepcional como un reptil milenario o un águila exótica, pero si son muy funcionales y han acompañado al hombre a lo largo de su supervivencia y es por ello que me enorgullece mostrárlas y compartir su proceso incorporación en mi granja próximamente.

Todos estos gestos que les comenté acercan a un criador y castador a conocer cuando y donde ponen sus gallinas, con cuántos huevos se echan en el nido, si son secuestradoras de nidos o bien cuantos pollitos suele sacar por ciclo.

Un gesto sencillo como una nidada en tiempos de crisis, puede traernos alegría, esperanza y propósito, así es la naturaleza la maestra que te enseña que siempre habrá reinicio para una nueva etapa de crecimiento.
