Too much of anything is harmful - Sanskrit Teaching
Yesterday, my brother had an upset stomach, he vomited and had indigestion. He had some over eating in an office party resulting his bad health. My Dad soon o.es with an advice that too much of anything is harmful and we should be constrained with whatever we have. This is true words as we often find people running after things that they already have, still they need more and more.
We have a some similar Sanskrit phrases that give us a great insight of drawbacks of excessiveness of anything.
अति रूपेण वा सीता अति गर्वेण रावणः|
अतिदानाद्बलिर्बद्धो ह्यतिः सर्वत्र वर्जयेत्||
Ati roopena vaa Sita ati garvena Raavanah.
Atidaanaadbalirbaddho hyatih sarvatra varjayet.
Ati = too much.
Roopena = being beautiful.
Vaa = or
Sita = the consort of Lord Rama.
Garvena = by being very proud.
Ravanah = the demon king and the ruler of Lanka.
Ati + daanaat + Balih + baddho. Daanaat = by being charitable.
Bali = The demon king of the underworld. Baddho = bounded.
Hyati = hi + ato.
Hi = surely.
Savatra = in every case, everywhere. Varjayet = should be given up.
By giving some examples from Ramayana, the author try to pinpoint some important point. The author like highlight that "Devi Sita, the consort of Lord Shri Ram was abducted by Ravana,the demon King, because of her being very beautiful, and Ravana himself got killed due to his excessive pride. The Demon King Bali was
kept under bondage only because of his very charitable nature. That is why it is said that too much of any thing, even if it may be good, is harmful and should be given up in every case."
Sita, Ram, Ravana, Bali are all Indian mythological character. They have important role in the Ramayana and how their good quality were exploited were mentioned in these lines. So always remain happy with the limited requirement and do not get carried away with excessive demand.
