The cassava compote is ready to serve

Hello everyone, I would like to share how cassava plant is used in our place, and also how to make cassava compote.

Cassava in Our Daily Diet

Do you grow ketela pohon or cassava in your place? Ketela pohon or cassava is brought to Indonesia by Portuguese in the 16-th century from a place in Spain called "Castilla" hence it derived its name "ketela". pohon (the second word) means tree. It took three hundred years for it to become known to the public in Indonesia from the time it was brought. It's funny to think that this plant is only become known in public only at the beginning of the 1900, but it felt like it's naturally grown in our country.

Nowadays, cassava is very common in Indonesia. It is usually grown in the farm, or in house yard. It is very easy to grow, just cut its trunk and plant the cuttings on the ground.

The root or the yam is edible, as well as its leaves as vegetables. Beside consumed as it is by the people in daily life, it is also commercially farmed for their yams which then upon harvest is processed into tapioca flour.

Making Cassava Compote

My wife and I had a bunch of cassava that we brought from my wife's home. We decided we wanted to make cassava compote.

I peeled the cassava one by one. The way to do it is by cutting straight on its skin along its length. Next, we pulled the skin out by hand from the edge where the cut is.

When of them were peeled, we wash them. We made sure they were clean from dirt as it came out from the ground. I cut the yam into smaller pieces.

We also prepared some brown sugar and coconut milk.

We boil the cassava until become soft while adding the brown sugar. When the cassava turn soft, we know it was ready.

To serve the cassava compote, we put some on a small plate and shimmered it with coconut milk.
