Shades of Bruges - Belgium

I have traveled to many cities and tourist attractions, and while many trips didn’t go as planned, I have no regrets. I have realized I am not the type who enjoys seeing everything at once; in fact, hectic travel schedules make me anxious. This often leads to missing key locations. Interestingly, I never research new places beforehand—I prefer surprises, even if it makes my trips chaotic. It might sound foolish, but that’s how I like to do things. My life has been full of unexpected events, so a few more surprises won't hurt. This spontaneous approach adds excitement to my travels, even if it sometimes leads to unexpected challenges and that's okay.

Visiting cities often feels like walking into a new world, much like how hearing different opinions can offer new perspectives from individuals. However, while cities always speak positively to me, I often struggle to accept people's opinions. Each city has its own unique shades, expressing itself through its culture, history, and architecture. I quietly enjoy these shades, immersing myself in their vibrant colors. Exploring new places allows me to appreciate the diverse ways in which cities communicate their essence and that helps me to understand and appreciate its true character.

It's been a while since I have visited Belgium's medieval city Bruges, my visit was during Christmas time; during the holiday season. I wandered around the city without navigation, enjoying the freedom to explore without stress or the rush to see specific historical sites. Following straight roads and venturing down narrow alleys, I discovered incredible architecture at my own pace.

This is the most important part of the city of Bruges (well I think 😁) and a famous spot for tourists. I was sitting opposite side of the beautiful city hall of Bruges. I admired its stunning gothic architecture, surrounded by notable landmarks while sitting right in front of this building. From this viewpoint, I was seeing the Belfort (bell tower from far away) of Bruges and the Basilica of the Holy Blood Church. Because it was Christmas, a beautiful Christmas tree was placed in front of the city hall; was adding to the festive charm. As I sat opposite the building, I enjoyed the astonishing view and watched horse carriages pass by. Observing from a distance allowed me to discover and appreciate different aspects of Bruges.

The city was busy, packed with tourists because it was the holiday season but the crowd didn't fade my experience. Chocolate and waffle shops were busy and crowded but somehow I was merged there and didn't feel separated. The rich aroma of hot chocolate was everywhere. One of the best things about Bruges is that you don't have to search for hot chocolate shops; they are everywhere. There's even a specific street lined with chocolate shops. Despite the busy atmosphere, I seamlessly blended into the crowd and that's still a mystery to me how I have done that...

What stood out most about Bruges to me? Definitely the architecture. The city’s preserved medieval buildings make it a landmark in itself. For me, the intricate details of these historical structures were even more striking than the famous Belfort. Iconic landmarks like the City Hall, Historium Bruges, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood showcase Bruges' rich architectural heritage, along with many other notable structures.

I am still trying to decide what was more enjoyable—strolling around with my hot chocolate or sitting somewhere and appreciating the holiday atmosphere and architecture.

Eventually, my memories may fade, but I believe the delightful hot chocolate scents and sights and shades of Bruges' streets will always linger in my mind.
