Polish Food Dinner and Night walk in Krakow, Poland

(Edited)

I expected cold autumn days in Poland but I was not expecting chilly nice Indiana Summer Fall in Poland. Not too cold, not too hot; perfect time. I have always loved Fall weather because this is one of the best seasons of all seasons. Anyway, I had never been to Krakow before until I went to HiveBeeCon. Last time in 2022, when I was in Poland, my mental condition was horrible due to the war situation so it was impossible to visit Krakow with that kind of depressive mindset even though I stayed in Katowice for a month.

If you are following my blogs, then you already know why I went to Krakow this year. I was in Krakow for 24-36 hours but I enjoyed every moment while staying there. The city was like what I pictured in my mind, a city that reminded me of a glimpse of my second home Kharkiv, Ukraine. Architecture and cultural styles are almost similar, medieval or neo-classical or Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic style buildings. So similar that at one moment, I felt like I was walking in one of the famous streets in Kharkiv. Sumska Street, Constitution Square, Istorychnyi Myzei these locations in Kharkiv were in my mind when I was walking on the streets of Krakow. It was emotional but pleasant as well because I felt connected.

I cannot adjust to any place so easily, I like many cities and countries but when it comes to long-term living, I prefer those cities where I feel connected.

I was in Krakow for a very short time so it was kinda impossible to see the city because my full focus was on Hive Meetup. Whatever photos I have taken in Krakow, I took from here and there without knowing anything. Trust me I don't know anything about Krakow yet so it's very difficult to write about my experience.

But within those few hours, of walking on the unknown streets, I realized that this city has a lot of things to offer. Not only the city is well preserved medieval city but also the significant history makes this city unique and one the oldest cities in Poland. I think those who are from the Czech Republic, also find similarities because of the borderline.

History says Krakow dates around to the 7th century, it was the capital (1038) of Poland before Warsaw. Just like Kharkiv was the capital of Ukraine/ USSR before Kyiv/ Moscow (about Moscow, not sure). History can be found in almost every corner of Krakow City. I saw 2 neighborhoods in Krakow, that reminded me of my home where I cannot stay now. source

My walk in the city was short, it was like going from here to there; to reach the locations. On my way, while walking I took these random street photos. Beautiful medieval period architectural buildings stand still, well preserved, and enhance the beauty of the city. I am sure locals feel so proud living in such a city.

Weekend nights in Krakow are lively and vibrant. Streets are crowded but not overcrowded and around the city center a lot of pubs, cafes, and restaurants are located. At night you can enjoy your dinner while listening to live music or you can walk on the street while listening to music. Cafes and restaurants are different from one another and a lot of variations in cuisines are available in thematic restaurants, and pubs as well.

I was with @jocieprosza, @asia-pl, and @blind-spot along with Bombel. Bombel was looking at the cars and talking about colors and the names of the cars. Well, I am telling you guys, he will buy his own car soon. Our dinner was pre-planned and we wanted to spend some time together. I was excited to see them after a long time because when I left Katowice, I felt like I was leaving my family behind. I cannot even express the connection and bonding with Poland and its people.

We walked around the city center of Krakow and tried to find a restaurant for dinner. We also couldn't figure out what we wanted to eat for dinner, there were a lot of suggestions but nothing was concrete. I was open to tasting any kind of food.

The city center was quite busy after all it was Saturday night. Not only locals were there but also I noticed a lot of tourists enjoying their time while having dinner. Some of them were walking on the square, some were having lazy walks to explore the city.

I don't know why I liked this ice cream shop called Bubble Waffle, but I liked the pink neon color, furniture, and atmosphere.

She was sitting at the corner of a street and she was playing live music using Cello. I am sure she is from Ukraine because I saw the Ukrainian flag in her instrument bag, I might be wrong. We were in a hurry otherwise I would have stood there sometime to see her playing Cello.

20231007_193753 (1).jpg20231007_193912.jpg20231007_193753.jpg

I took potato pancake and beef stew, I think it's Polish food. It was delicious.

In my opinion, some restaurants in Krakow are very expensive, the meal price and dinner prices are similar to the Netherlands. I know the menu and meal price was high because of the location, but I am sure outside of the city center, the price is cheaper.

The rain started while we were having dinner.

Such kind of unique days don't come every day, they come once a year or maybe take more than a year. These moments are special and memorable. Whenever I go somewhere I try to make and create memories because after fleeing from the war, I have realized life is short, unpredictable and anything can happen anytime. Present will be past and probably in the future, the pleasant memories might keep you alive.

Thank you...

So you knew the Hivers you mention? You've met them before?
I suppose the lady playing the cello was trying to earn a little pocket money as she's got her case open there too throw some money in. I rarely have any cash on me.. I ought to change that.. lol.

Beautiful pictures my friend!
When I lived in Hamburg I meant to visit Poland but I never did.
Now I live further away, but I really need to plan a trip!

I'm not a "pink" person but that ice cream shop does look very nice indeed!
A very arty shot! 👏

Yes, when I had to flee from Ukraine, I ended up in Poland and these two Hivers were my host family. That's how I get to know them.

Exactly but I forgot to mention one thing, her music was emotional and full of sadness. I can understand why... Struggling and Surviving in Europe is a real deal after fleeing from the war.

Now I live further away, but I really need to plan a trip!

You should and I am sure you will love every minute in Poland...

I'm surprised that you thought of restaurants in Krakow as expensive and being on similar level as the restaurants in The Netherlands. Every time I go to a restaurant in The Netherlands I'm shocked by the prices. I find it so expensive! 😂 Krakow was as I expected as it's a big popular city and I think also their salaries are above Polish average. But anyway, looks like you had a lovely evening 🤗

Every time I go to a restaurant in The Netherlands I'm shocked by the prices.

Me too but considering the salary of the Netherlands, minimum wage people can afford good restaurant meals once a month or once in two months except for restaurants in Amsterdam/ Haarlem/Almere. Restaurants in Den Haag are cheaper than in Amsterdam. Hahaha... In Krakow, the restaurant we chose was near the square, a popular place and a lot of tourists. But also near the square most of the restaurants were expensive and the price was similar to Almere/Amsterdam.

I think also their salaries are above Polish average

That can be a reason also, you are right. Compared to the Polish average salary, I find it quite expensive also...

Have a great week Martina :)

Some lovely photos there! It's strange how you can visit some places and feel at home right away, yet other places you just want to get out of there! I'm happy you had an enjoyable visit. ❤️

Exactly and I figure out my mentality works that way. I grew up in the capital city in the concrete jungle and often wanted to get away from it. I was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a densely populated country. The walk was short but it was nice but the nasty rain ruined everything...

I know how much you love the rain ... not. I'm one of the weird people who loves the rain. I like lots of shots of umbrellas.

As you know we stayed for a few days. But, we spent more time chitchatting with each other (hive people), even while walking through the city than looking around hahaha.

When you are surrounded by community people (hive), you have so much to talk about. I also prefer chitchatting more with Hive people rather than wondering around :D

Exactly, the more you see, the more you enjoy even if you don't know the history while seeing those architectural structures. I often wonder Roman Empire and their concepts of architecture, pretty good designs and creations. Urbanism flourished at that moment...

Take care and thank you...

I'm also impressed by your ability to adjust to different places. It's not easy to find a place where you feel connected, especially after having to flee from war. I'm glad you found that connection in Krakow, and I hope you continue to find it in other places as well.

The characters of Krakow city and Kharkov city are similar though Krakow follows gothic, Roman, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture whereas Kharkiv was all about Soviet, a little mixture of Renaissance and Baroque architecture.

Sometimes I blame my architecture knowledge and academic life for this ability because my preference and taste are always very picky when it comes to long-term living in a space/city...

Thank you for stopping by...

Good morning!

I don't know anything about Poland, although I have several invitations from friends I've made throughout my life, but almost all from friends I've made in Taizé. I had a trip planned for the spring of 2020, but CoVid put it off (until now)... Let's see if I can visit at least one city in this rich country. My original plan was to visit Krakow and Poznan, but at the moment I'm not sure what the plan will be when the time comes to make the trip. Unfortunately I couldn't organize my schedule (holidays at my workplace) to be able to attend the HiveBeeCon meeting.

sitting at the corner of a street and she was playing live music using Cello. I am sure she is from Ukraine because I saw the Ukrainian flag in her instrument bag, I might be wrong. We were in a hurry otherwise I would have stood there sometime to see her playing Cello.

This passage reminds me of my last walk through Lisbon. As I didn't have the time "counted", and had the day to myself, I let myself be carried away by the impressions I found, and among various street artists, I came across a lyrical singer and a violinist who played, among other things, the song from the Game of Thrones series and Radiohead's "Creep"... it was a chicken skin experience with the latter song... It's a song that really marked my youth.

I hope to have some "spare" time during this week to post something about that day in Lisbon :)

Cheers

Unfortunately I couldn't organize my schedule (holidays at my workplace) to be able to attend the HiveBeeCon meeting.

I can understand that because it's not so easy to manage time from work. Covid destroyed a lot. I remember I had so many plans after my master's graduation but because of covid, I had to stay at home. But yes, I am glad I had Hive and was able to pay my rent and living using Hive. I didn't travel much before the covid and after COVID-19, I traveled to a lot of locations in Ukraine but after coming to NL (Netherlands), I have managed to travel. HiveBeeCon was a chance for me to visit Poland once again as I have a lot of Hive friends there.

I came across a lyrical singer and a violinist who played, among other things, the song from the Game of Thrones series and Radiohead's "Creep".

Must be nice. I admire street artists a lot and try to help them by admiring their work. One of the performances I will remember always, a music from a pianist. He was performing so well that I stood there for around half an hour just to hear the beautiful music...

I would suggest you manage some time to showcase the beauty of Lisbon with us as well...

Have a great day and take care.

Beautiful tribute to Krakow. I know that you, an architect, can appreciate the stunning beauty and value of Krakow architecture even more than ordinary folks. I´m one of them (ordinary folks) but during those almost 2 years that we lived in Krakow, I was admiring the very special vibes of the city literally every day. You are right, some cities in my country (Czech Republic) are similar to Krakow, especially Prague, but to be honest with you, I like Krakow even more than Prague. There is something magical about Krakow. I hope you will be able to come back and stay for longer. You will love it ;)

Greetings from Prague!

Yes, you are absolutely right, Krakow city has a very special character. Ordinary folks nowadays also understand architecture and appreciate its history. I remember when I was a student of architecture, we used to read about Roman, greek, and medieval architecture. Right now I forgot most part of my academic life, especially history. I personally enjoyed the architecture in Italy, so rich and aesthetic but now after seeing Krakow, I would say, this city will be one of my favorite cities. I will definitely go to Krakow again to spend more time and I hope we will meet again somewhere in Europe...

Take care and thank you for your wonderful feedback...
