"MY SAFETY NET"
My safety net
That protects me from
a cruel world
They say I watch the world
pass me by
They call me a coward
too scared to live
By they don't know what I know
How can they
when they haven't lived my life?
My safety net
they call a self-imposed prison
But this is their mistake
not mine
It may not be modern
but it's my shield
All I need at my fingertips
Because I learned to do away
with extras
I am happy
Cocoon from peril
I exist in pure safety
Watching the unfortunate
navigate danger each day
And yet they still call me foolish
Learn to live they say
Learn to live better I tell them
With a glass in hand
I listen as they rant impossibilities
One said the known way is too easy
So now he is going to create
a new path
What a waste of precious time!!!
But for some reason
I can't stop watching
Is it going to happen?
Can it even be done?
I watch anxiously
not sure if I am waiting
for news of success
or an announcement of failure
But then fate strikes
It's a breakthrough
Now the once unfortunate
leads the pack
Disciples try to copy his footprint
Now he says and others listen
What a change of pace
From my shield
I reach forward to touch him
But my attempts are futile
I have become just another one
in the crowd
Hoping for a glance of recognition
Based on past acquaintance
"Your invisible now"
My mind says in an attempt
to clarify my confusion
"To be seen you need to COME OUT"
No!!! I can not accept it
Why must I leave here?
Why should I join the others?
The known part is familiar
I am sure of my destination
And loneliness is never an option
Wait, where has everyone else gone?
Why am I the only one left
on a path always crowded?
I look around bewildered.....
To find my previous companions
Spread out on all sides of me
Tediously navigating
several unchartered paths
Once crowded has become lonely
Was it always my mistake?
Could it have been foolishness
Disguised as wisdom?
Only time holds the answers.
For now, I stay Cherishing
My safety net.
We alone know what our safety net is...others will never understand. What an emotive poem. Well written too. 🙂

!PIZZA good poem. The way I see safety nets are that they are there in the background, a kind of plan B to fall back on if plan A does not work out. Having one is a blessing as it enables us to venture down the road not travelled, to risk the unfamiliar in the hope of attaining something special and enduring in life. I hope the protagonist of your poem has an epiphany and the courage to step out of the shadows and off of her safety net every now and then. "Two roads diverged in a wood and I, I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference" - Robert Frost. Robert Frost had a way with words too :-)
So glad you like my poem 😊 this would be the very first time I try writing a poem and even I was shocked to see I didn't do too bad a job at it.
Everybody does need a safety net, something that keeps us grounded and centered but I feel sometimes we get so used to this feeling of safety we forget to live.
Luckily my protagonist is learning to reach out rather than continue hidden in the dark and I believe in time she will.
