There's always someone watching

I've once written on a topic talking about how it's sad that this generation thinks that it's cool to not care about what other people thinks about us and although I stated some reasons why it's important to care, something happened two nights ago that just reaffirms my thoughts on the issue.

About two night ago, the president of my hostel had been insulted by another lady who stays at the hostel because of his poor decision making in handling certain issues. If you ask me, she took it too far with her insults but surprisingly, everyone seemed to be on her side that night and no one said a word against her, even though the whole thing happened at the hostel's group chat.

Just for context, here's a summary of what happened that night. Basically we have a rule at our hostel at all generator has to be turned off before or by 11:59pm at night. This is to reduce noise and give everyone the chance to have a goodnight rest. Well for a while now, there have been some defaulters of that rule, the president included.

So someone had brought up the issue at the group chat and although that person didn't mention any names, he made his point clear that he was disappointed at the fact that no one was obeying the rules anymore. This person gave a standard and valid complaint but what happened next shocked everyone and also made the night an interesting one for everyone except for the president himself.

The President had seen that complaint and instead of doing the right thing which was admitting his mistake and promising to do better, he had instead insulted the guy who made the complaint and before the guy could defend himself, another occupant at the hostel, a lady, came to his defense and said a lot of things, these were words that are capable of making a grown man cry.

Now usually when the president gets insulted or disrespected, there are always people ready to come to his defense and challenge the person who insulted the president but in this case, no one did anything like that and this was because for a while now, the president has been biased in his judgement. Giving special privileges to his brother and certain people at the hostel, and although no one was saying anything, everyone was watching.

And I came to know this that night because one by one, everyone began to lay complains on why they feel the president was incompetent when it comes to him doing his job. They all began to state cases where he had been biased or favored someone, some of the things said that night were cases I thought were already long forgotten, but apparently not.

Everyone started to point accusing fingers at him, saying he wasn't trustworthy and all that, and it got to a stage where the pressure became too much that he ended up stepping down from his office as the president.

I as usual watched the whole thing play out from a corner and it felt like I was seeing a movie free of charge. At the end, the whole thing confirmed what I meant when I said that people are watching. We don't have to live our lives like we're being watched but we should always try to do the right things and live an honest life so that when people come to attack us in the future, we won't have to lift a finger to defend ourselves because people will do it for us, people who know how good and honest we are.

But if you choose to live a life where it feels like you don't care, get ready to dance to your music when the time comes because you might end up being all alone, just like the president in this case.

Indeed, our generation usually have an uncaring approach to life, some think that it doesn't matter what people think. This is very wrong, it sets one up for damages in the future. I am sure that initially, the president would feel he doesn't care what people say or that he was more powerful than everyone. Now, he must have learnt a hard lesson.
It's always better to learn without experiencing bad circumstances but he has missed that chance

Exactly my point. Because people weren't saying anything, he felt he could do whatever he wanted, not knowing everyone was watching and waiting for a day to come at him, an ambush.

Hopefully he learns from this experience.
