Visit Portugal - Square.png

It was an early morning when I decided to visit the historic Infante D. Henrique Square in Porto. I wanted to capture the essence of this beautiful place without the usual crowd, so I made sure to leave my home at the break of dawn.

As I strolled through the quiet streets, the city still seemed to be in a gentle slumber. The only sounds were the occasional chirping of birds and the distant hum of the river Douro, providing a serene backdrop to my hike. The sky was clear, a deep blue canvas. The coolness of the air was invigorating, with a light breeze that hinted at the warmth to come later in the day.

I was greeted by the magnificent sight of the statue of Infante D. Henrique (Henrique the Navigator), after whom the square is named. The statue stands proudly at the center, commemorating the Portuguese prince who was a central figure in the early days of the "Age of Discoveries". Surrounded by well manicured gardens, the statue exuded an aura of adventure and exploration, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of the prince.

The square itself was a harmonious blend of history and tranquility. Without the usual hustle and bustle of tourists, the atmosphere was almost magical. The sun had begun to rise, casting a golden glow over the buildings and the lush greenery of the gardens.

One of the first landmarks that caught my eye was the Palácio da Bolsa, located adjacent to the square. This stunning building, once the stock exchange, is now a major tourist attraction and a venue for various events. Although I only saw it from the outside, its grandeur was undeniable.

The Palácio da Bolsa architecture is amazing!!! Its imposing structure, with large columns and majestic arches, commands attention. Even from the outside, I could sense the elegance that awaited inside.

Next to the Palácio da Bolsa is the Mercado Ferreira Borges, another architectural gem that I viewed from the outside. This iron market hall, stands as a symbol of the industrial revolution that swept through Europe. Its bold, red structure contrasted beautifully with the more classical architecture of the surrounding buildings.

The market design, with its large windows and intricate ironwork, is both functional and artistic. The Mercado Ferreira Borges now hosts cultural events and exhibitions, contributing to the lively cultural scene of Porto.

I decided to find a bench in the square and simply relax, allowing myself to fully absorb the beauty and tranquility of my surroundings.

From this area, it's easy to reach the Ribeira and the D. Luís I Bridge, making it a great spot to relax while staying close to everything!!
