Year End New Clothing Audit, 6th Year

Hello friends! @shanibeer beat me to it this year, but every year in January I do an audit to see how many clothing items I bought in the past year. This tradition started after I saw an episode of Hasan Minhaj's show where he said that in the 80s, the average American bought a dozen new clothing items per year, but in the modern era the average is 68! That's more than one a week, and really speaks to the disposable nature of the fast fashion industry. I try and focus on quality over quantity, and get pieces that will last rather than lots that will fall apart. This also works well since I don't have a ton of money to spend on clothes! Some data in memes for you before I get to my totals:

$100 per month! Cheese and crackers, no wonder the average these days is 68 new items of clothing.

Onto my numbers:

2019: 8 items
2020: 16 (counting masks as a clothing item)
2021: 3 items (counting masks)
2022: 7 items
2023: 6 items

2024: 5 items

Two thermal shirts, two pairs of underwear, and one hoodie.

That's Yuan taking Laeg on an adventure! Their colors are perfect, I had to get this one. It came from Redbubble. And I live in hoodies, so it gets a lot of wear!

So yeah, I am below even the 80s average. But I exited 2024 in dire need of a few basics as most of mine were falling apart, even though I mend. So I already hit up Levi's clearance post-xmas sale and scored a new pair of jeans for $19.90 - that's with tax, and free shipping. Woohoo! But that will count toward 2025's numbers since I just ordered them today. ;)

How many new items of clothing did you buy in 2024? Let me know in the comments, or write your own post! :)

What a cool idea! I hadn't thought to do an inventory, but I probably should. Definitely higher numbers (though well below the average), which is something I'm actively working on to cut back. Thanks for making this post as a start-of-year reminder to keep an eye on my spending this year, clothes-wise! Happy New Year! :)

Love the hoodie! Great bargain hunting for the Levis, too.

Thirty-four items last year (down from 68 in my most flamboyant year):
four were duds (charity shop buys), I've donated three and given one to my niece.
fifteen were replacements (socks, underwear, pyjamas), I went a bit OTT on the socks.
three I haven't taken possession of yet, ordered on 31 December, they're in transit.
I'm wondering about setting a budget for this year - twelve items? 🤔

I liked Leena Norms' challenge last year: she couldn't buy clothes new or second-hand, anything she wanted she had to make, including adapting from what she already had. That included a Regency style outfit to go to a Jane Austen event 😂.

I don't craft fast enough to make that resolution, LOL!
Maybe if you're wanting to really cut it down that far, make it 17 items (half of this year)?

I must look and see if she's done a "here's how the year went" video.

Seventeen feels like luxury.

I seldom buy clothes but I did buy extra underwear items and socks as I store them to use as needed over years and my stock was low. I only buy used locally and I think I got a few work shirts and a couple work pants this year. I also got 2 pairs of used sneakers for when the sole finally comes off the current pair. I'm definitely not a new clothes often kind of person.

I have socks for miles and the thing is I haven't bought any myself in soooo many years, but people keep buying them for me as gifts. I am usually barefoot. LOL

I used to be barefoot all the time, since childhood. But as I got older I developed neuromas in the balls of both feet. Apparently I can never walk barefoot again. sigh…

I am currently doing audit but to my skincare. As I am getting interested into this, I don't want it to get out of hands. I'll share this topic this Friday since that's my schedule for minimalism related blog 😁 you're definitely inspiring me to go over my shirts too

We've all got different things that we tend to gather more of. For me it was books and craft supplies, and it took a lot of work to give away books and use up craft supplies. :)
