My record today focuses on this date because it strikes me that my country is among the five founding countries, they were: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and #Venezuela. In fact, this last country on the list, for reasons of alphabetical order, is the one that has the privilege of having been the one that proposed the idea of creating this economic cartel as a response to price control actions by the oil companies that distributed oil and its derivatives, and that had the support (open or covert) of their host countries.
OPEC emerged from the initiative of the then Minister of Mines and #Hydrocarbons of Venezuela, Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonzo, who managed to form this alliance of the main world producers to create an institution capable of setting #oil policies that would lead to the stability of the world market. After his statement in Baghdad, they set the headquarters of the organization in Geneva (Switzerland), but in 1965 it was moved to Vienna (Austria) where it is currently located.
As an organization, OPEC played a certain role in the energy crisis of the 1970s, putting pressure on the markets of the economic powers with a contraction in oil production, which led to forced negotiation and showed the capacity of the organization to agree among its members economic actions to achieve benefits for their countries.
This reminds me that Venezuela is still the country with the largest number of internationally certified heavy #oil reserves, in addition to the fact that I seem to remember that it is the country with the largest proven reserves in the American continent. These are data that explain why when it was the time of oil boom, importance was given to the state oil company and very significant income was achieved for the coffers of the nation. But, unfortunately, in the 21st century, a political change gave rise to a gradual destruction of the meritocracy system, placing political operators in key positions who did not have the necessary training for the annexation of the company, causing their loss of production, to the point that Venezuela went from a production of more than 2.5 million barrels per day to less than 0.5 million barrels per day, that in just a few years, now it is being reported by OPEC that we are recovering production, and it seems that it rose to 0.6 million barrels per day, but the prospects of returning to the initial level that I mention are very distant, in addition to the fact that there is no desire on the part of the ruling political caste to allow #economic improvements to happen.
It is particularly ironic that an oil-producing country, with one of the largest oil refining complexes in the world, with the largest heavy oil reserves and which was home to an international company in oil and derivatives, is now suffering from low production, to the extent that it practically cannot even satisfy its internal demand for #fuel. The irony is reinforced when it is noted that this has also led to a strong loss of international influence and that we have gone from being remembered as one of the founders to being now simple poor members of the club of oil countries, with the 'joke' that if is we continue as we are, we may even stop having the capacity to extract oil from the subsoil, with which we would no longer be designated as a producing country.
The lack of fuel, I live it in my day to day, in particular today, when I have suffered about 14 interruptions of the #electrical flow, because the National Electric System is collapsing, in a slow motion agony, while the #thermoelectric plants that require fuel to try to alleviate this situation, they are almost paralyzed by the extreme lack of #fuel. Anyway, one is resigned to trying to survive in the decline of all this and move on, for now I have #electricity, so I must take advantage of publishing before another unannounced #blackout falls on me. Mi registro de hoy se centra en esta fecha porque me llama la atención que entre los cinco países fundadores se encuentra mi país, ellos eran: Irán, Irak, Kuwait, Arabia Saudí y #Venezuela. De hecho, este último país de la lista, por cuestiones del orden alfabético, es el que tiene el privilegio de haber sido el que propuso la idea de la creación de este cartel económico como respuesta a las acciones de control de precios por parte de las empresas petroleras que distribuían el petróleo y sus derivados, y que contaban con el apoyo (abierto o encubierto) de sus países sedes.
OPEP surgió de la iniciativa del entonces Ministro de Minas e #Hidrocarburos de Venezuela, Juan Pablo Pérez Alfonzo, quien logró formar esta alianza de los principales productores mundiales para crear una institución capaz de fijar políticas #petroleras que condujeran a la estabilidad del mercado mundial. Luego de su declaración en Bagdad, fijaron la sede de la organización en Ginebra (Suiza), pero en 1965 se trasladó a Viena (Austria) donde se encuentra en la actualidad.
Como organización, la OPEP jugó cierto papel en la crisis energética de los 70, al presionar a los mercados de las potencias económicas con una contracción de la producción de petróleo, lo que llevó a una obligada negociación y a mostrar la capacidad de la organización para concertar entre sus miembros acciones económicas para el logro de beneficios para sus países.
Esto me hace recordar que Venezuela aún es el país con la mayor cantidad de reservas de petróleo pesado certificado internacionalmente, además de que creo recordar que es el de mayores reservas probadas en el continente americano. Esos son datos que explican por qué cuando fue la época de bonanza petrolera, se dio importancia a la empresa petrolera estatal y se lograron ingresos muy significativos para las arcas de la nación. Pero, por desgracia, en el Siglo XXI, un cambio político dio origen a una paulatina destrucción del sistema de meritocracia, colocando en posiciones claves a operadores políticos que no tenían la formación necesaria para el anejo de la empresa, causando su perdida de producción, hasta el punto de que Venezuela pasó de una producción de más de 2.5 millones de barriles diarios a menos de 0.5 millones de barriles diarios, eso en apenas unos pocos años, ahora es que se está reportando por parte de la OPEP que estamos recuperando la producción y parece que subió a 0.6 millones de barriles diarios, pero las perspectivas de volver al nivel inicial que menciono están muy lejanas, además de que no hay el deseo por parte de la casta política dirigente de permitir que las mejoras económicas sucedan.
Es particularmente irónico que un país productor de petróleo, con uno de los complejos refinadores de petróleo más grandes del mundo, con la mayor reserva de petróleo pesado y que fue sede de una empresa de alcance internacional en petróleo y derivados, ahora está sufriendo de baja producción, al grado de que prácticamente no puede ni satisfacer su demanda interna de #combustible. La ironía se refuerza cuando se nota que esto también ha llevado a una fuerte perdida de influencia internacional y que pasemos de ser recordados como uno de los fundadores a ser ahora simples miembros pobres del club de países petroleros, con el 'chiste' de que si seguimos como vamos, puede que dejemos incluso de tener la capacidad de extraer el petróleo del subsuelo, con lo que ya no seríamos designados como país productor.
La carencia de combustible, la vivo en mi día a día, en particular hoy, cuando he sufrido unos 14 interrupciones del flujo eléctrico, porque el Sistema Eléctrico Nacional está colapsando, en una agonía a cámara lenta, mientras que las termoeléctricas que requieren combustible para poder tratar de paliar esta situación, están casi paralizadas por la extrema falta de combustible. En fin, que uno se resigna a tratar de sobrevivir en el declive de todo esto y seguir adelante, por ahora tengo electricidad, así que debo aprovechar de publicar antes de que me caiga otro #apagon no anunciado.
