A pesar de que Netflix puede ser (merecidamente) criticado por varias de sus producciones, especialmente esas enfocadas en live action que muchas veces danzan entre lo pírrico y lo ridícilo y que terminan por ser, cuando menos, olvidables; su catálogo de animaciones, por el contrario, es remarcable. Brindándonos posiblemente las mejores obras de este género en el 2023. Y, para mantener el ritmo en el año que acabó recientemente, cerraron con broche de oro con Pluto. El anime que nadie pedía, ni sabía que le hacía falta ver, hasta que lo vio. Es este un carrusel de emociones entre lo visual y su remarcable historia que, como la joya de la corona, deja tras de sí un poderoso mensaje.

Although Netflix can be (deservedly) criticized for several of its productions, especially those focused on live action that often dance between the pyrrhic and the ridiculous and end up being, at the very least, forgettable; its catalog of animations, on the contrary, is remarkable. Possibly providing us with the best works of this genre in 2023. And, to keep up the pace in the year that recently ended, they closed with a flourish with Pluto. The anime that no one asked for, nor knew they needed to see, until they saw it. It is a carousel of emotions between the visuals and its remarkable story that, as the crown jewel, leaves behind a powerful message.

A modo de reseña, es importante tener en cuenta de qué va, o mejor dicho dónde va, Pluto. Este se basa en el universo de Astro Boy, un personaje del manga/anime y de la cultura popular que creo que no requiere presentación. No obstante, deja atrás toda la temática infantil que lo caracteriza y nos traslada a un mundo mucho más "adulto", por llamarle de alguna forma; tal como sucede en el manga homónimo de esta obra; en una época futurista donde humanos y robots conviven, en teoría, como iguales. Sin embargo con el paso de los capítulos es fácil notar que dicha igualdad no es más que un ideal que no es aceptado por toda la sociedad.

This is based on the universe of Astro Boy, a manga/anime and popular culture character that I believe requires no introduction. However, it leaves behind all the children's theme that characterizes it and moves us to a much more "adult" world, to call it somehow; as it happens in the homonymous manga of this work; in a futuristic era where humans and robots coexist, in theory, as equals. However, as the chapters go by, it is easy to notice that this equality is nothing more than an ideal that is not accepted by society as a whole.

La historia inicia con la noticia de que uno de los robots más queridos por la humanidad ha muerto en extrañas circunstancias. Y pronto se descubre que no es el único cuando el detective Gesicht, nuestro protagonista, concluye que alguien está asesinando a los robots más avanzados del mundo y a un grupo de humanos defensores de los derechos de este primer grupo. A partir de ahí la trama va tornándose cada vez más profunda, sin dejar de ser disfrutable y, lo más importante, sin perder la coherencia.

The story starts with the news that one of humanity's most beloved robots has died under strange circumstances. And soon it is discovered that he is not the only one when the detective Gesicht, our protagonist, concludes that someone is murdering the most advanced robots in the world and a group of humans defending the rights of this first group. From then on, the plot becomes deeper and deeper, while still being enjoyable and, most importantly, without losing coherence.

Los personajes

La identidad de cada uno de los personajes es quizá el punto más fuerte de Pluto. Cada uno, humano o robot, es un alma diferente que, en todo momento, se siente como tal. Decidí señalar este punto en particular porque existe la mala costumbre del anime de crear a muchos personajes secundarios que acaban por ser "del montón"; unos acartonados sin motivaciones ni propósito que solo sirven, cuando mucho, para fungir como trampolín del protagonista o añadir minutos innecesarios a la trama. Error que esta joya no comete.

The identity of each of the characters is perhaps the strongest point of Pluto. Each one, human or robot, is a different soul that, at all times, feels like one. I decided to point out this particular point because there is a bad habit in anime of creating many secondary characters that end up being "ordinary"; stiff characters with no motivation or purpose that only serve, at best, to serve as a springboard for the protagonist or to add unnecessary minutes to the plot. A mistake that this gem does not make.

Puedo asegurar que, luego de terminar la serie, sería imposible no recordar a todas y cada una (o por lo menos a muchas) de las figuras que construyen la historia. Bien sean los protagonistas, antagonistas, o secundarios con escasos minutos en pantalla; o incluso, como es el caso de Montblanc, los que ni siquiera vemos en tiempo presente. Es impensable que uno pueda no encariñarse con ellos y empatizar con sus historias, puesto que tienen un trasfondo que les otorga esa calidez que se agradece.

I can assure you that, after finishing the series, it would be impossible not to remember each and every one (or at least many) of the figures that make up the story. Whether they are the protagonists, antagonists, or secondary characters with few minutes on screen; or even, as in the case of Montblanc, those we don't even see in the present tense. It is unthinkable that one could not get attached to them and empathize with their stories, since they have a background that gives them that warmth that is appreciated.

No está de más mencionar que Pluto está lleno de alegorías y referencias hacia la vida misma y el sentido de esta. Su intención en este sentido es hacer cuestionar al espectador sobre qué es realmente estar vivo. Pocos animes, y animaciones en general, me han llevado al punto de cuestionar mi juicio moral sobre el punto en el que se le puede considerar a algo como un ser "vivo". It goes without saying that Pluto is full of allegories and references to life itself and the meaning of life. Its intention in this sense is to make the viewer question what it is really like to be alive. Few anime, and animation in general, have brought me to the point of questioning my moral judgment about the point at which something can be considered a "living" being. Keeping in mind, of course, that this is fiction.

Más allá del mencionado elemento ficcioso, lleva consigo una serie de muy bien ejecutados mensajes, la mayoría referente a la discriminación, traumas postguerra, los peligros de la autocracia y, el más importante según un servidor, el ciclo de odio.

Beyond the aforementioned fictional element, it carries with it a number of very well executed messages, mostly concerning discrimination, post-war trauma, the dangers of autocracy and, most importantly according to yours truly, the cycle of hate.

«Del odio no nace nada»

Pluto es difícil de describir. Sería insulso calificarla solo como una serie detectivesca, donde se parte de un punto A (misterio/enigma a resolver), transcurriendo por el punto B (desarrollo) hasta llegar al punto C (resolución), aunque así es como es presentada en primera instancia. Apenas al terminar el primer capítulo para cualquier observador atento será fácil notar que la serie da un giro de 180 grados hacia algo más grande.

Pluto is difficult to describe. It would be tame to qualify it only as a detective series, where it starts from point A (mystery/enigma to be solved), going through point B (development) until reaching point C (resolution), although that is how it is presented in the first instance. As soon as the first chapter ends, it will be easy for any attentive observer to notice that the series takes a 180-degree turn towards something bigger.

Empecé a ver esta serie imaginándome que tenía frente a mí algo, en el peor de los casos, divertido, y terminé por cerrar el año frente a la mejor producción, según mi particular punto de vista, del 2023. Si tuviera que resumir Pluto diría que es una enseñanza sobre que del odio no nace nada. Esta última frase, de por sí, tiene un peso muy grande dentro de esta obra maestra que recomendaría ver a cualquier persona dispuesta a maravillarse.

I started watching this series imagining that I had in front of me something, at worst, funny, and I ended up closing the year in front of the best production, according to my particular point of view, of 2023. If I had to summarize Pluto I would say that it is a teaching that nothing is born from hate. This last sentence, in itself, has a very big weight within this masterpiece that I would recommend to see to anyone willing to marvel.
