Shadow Scryer (Magia) | 2.02 USD |
Holy Writ + Sanctify | 2.88 + 0.19 USD |
Heads or Tails | 0.56 USD |
Genesis is the original edition of Gods Unchained and it is normal to associate it with powerful and, above all, expensive cards, since the only way to obtain them at present is through the secondary market and some of them are scarce. However, it is enough to scrutinize the market a little to see that, although it does have alternatives that are (or could be) very useful, currently that last characteristic (high price) is not entirely true.
Of course, it is common to think of a Pyramid Warden, Avatar of War, Highborn Knight, Demogorgon (the crown jewel) or something like that when talking about Genesis, however the set is made up of many more options than that. That is why, in part, I decided to list some of those "economic" cards that are still interesting, as you will see below.
Canonize (Luz) | 2.53 USD |
| I could already say that this is my favorite. *Canonize is an option that should be in every aggro ligght; at least one copy. Since the archetype itself generally lacks options to remove opponent's creatures, this becomes an excellent option thanks to the 'protected' it grants. That added to the +3/+3 in stats makes it a great spell. |
Shadow Scryer (Magia) | 2.02 USD |
| This is a creature that has proven its value in the different variants of aggro magic or the popular card draw magic. I was surprised to see it on the market for less than two dollars. Considering that, in those archetypes, the mage does not have a lot of cards in hand, having the ability to "discard" the cards that do not serve us at the beginning of each turn is an important plus. Also, on its own it is a difficult creature to kill thanks to protected and ward. I like to see it as a Vexing Vicar with an additional effect. |
Charm (Engaño) | 2.11 USD |
| A very powerful spell that is not very much taken into account. Its second effect is perhaps reminiscent of the beloved and hated Cutthroat. The difference is that, besides the fact that Charm also has an impact on the table because it takes control of an opponent's creature for a turn, it can never be nerfed (just like the rest of the Genesis cards), while Cutthroat (Core) will probably have its days numbered. |
Agrodor Protector | 1.07 USD |
| An amazon creature of low mana cost, that just for its stats (3/5) is already worth a lot of money. It is currently the amazon of five mana or less with the highest health (along with Jungle Princess and Dalia, Night Gardener) and in itself has frontline and regen 1. In my amazon deck it is always present and, should this archetype become stronger, it will surely be a creature that will become much more valuable. |
Holy Writ + Sanctify | 2.88 + 0.19 USD |
| Here I'm cheating a bit by pigeonholing them together because I have the impression that they would make an excellent combo. For a hypothetical future in which the meta is dominated by decks like control magic, using them together with Holy Writ and Sanctify could define a game played with some light aggro or midrange. We are talking about +4 health and ward to all our creatures with two (or less) health and attack, something that abounds in that domain. At the present time of the meta they are not so necessary but that does not mean that it will be like that forever and, anyway, they are still useful. Message from the future: I started writing this before the cards in the 'Band of the Wolf' set were revealed. After that the price of several has changed and others remain exactly the same. In the case of Holy Writ it almost doubled its price from a couple of days ago (1.28 USD). |
Inflammable Imbecile | 0.29 USD |
| This is one of those cards that you see and think "it should be more popular". When we talk about Inflammable Imbecile being a 2/4 in stats for only one mana that's no small thing. It's probably a creature that was left in the shadow of Wild Hog, but the fact that, unlike Hog, this one doesn't have confused gives it a plus. Maybe for an armor war it would be a great option, as some armor would cancel out that burn 1 it has as a disadvantage. |
Heads or Tails | 0.56 USD |
| I saved the best for last, so here is my trutly favorite of the list. A card that is not even worth a dollar nowadays and yet it can be the most decisive if we play with an aggro deception. I have used it on several occasions and I would be lying if I didn't say that it was a differential factor at least a dozen times. In an aggro every point of damage counts, and doing four (or three) more with a spell of only two mana is not bad at all. |
Conclusion
I would have liked to bring something from the missing domains (War and Death), but I didn't come across anything that fit the profile I was looking for. However, therein lies the opportunities; in today's market there are a lot of "offers" related to cards and the utility they have. Many tend to believe that an expensive creature or spell will make them play better, leaving aside opportunities in cards that at first glance offer something better. It happens as much with Genesis as with any of the editions.

I faced a lot of Light decks with "Canonize" and I can say that I lost the majority of those matches because of "Canonize", it is indeed a very powerful card when used effectively.
It is a decisive spell. Sometimes spending five mana for it may seem expensive, but it is usually worth it.
