Football players who flopped after earning a big move.

Many football superstars across the world earn their dream or big move after putting on a string of good performances for their respective clubs, Not all of them live up to their former ability and here is my top 5

Danny drinkwater

After being a crucial member of Claudio ranieri's 2015/2016 title winning season with Leicester city , he earned a big move worth close to €35 million to London based club and defending European champions Chelsea alongside former midfield partner and world champion n'golo kante.

As compared to his former Leicester city teammate n'golo kante who has nailed his place in Thomas Tuchel's starting eleven and all previous managers, Danny drinkwater has featured only 12 times for the blues over the course of 5 years.

He has been sent on loan for most of his Chelsea career, he has featured for Aston villa, Burnley, kasimpas and he is currently playing in the championship with reading.

Chelsea fans were hoping he would be a great addition after his arrival but he has proved to be below the standards of the Chelsea player.

Fernando torres

Fernando torres broke liverpool's fan heart when he crossed the divide and joined Chelsea in the summer of 2011 for a reported €50 million

Fernando Torres had won all the reds's heart after a string of good performances for the Anfield supporters since his arrival from Atletico Madrid, he became the fastest liverpool player to reach 50 goals.

Though he had ensured all the liverpool fans that he was staying at Anfield in 2011, Chelsea made a €40 million bid for him which liverpool rejected thus encouraging Fernando torres to put in a transfer request which was also rejected but he finally got his wish and made the move

He played more than 100 times for the blues scoring over 20 times but his time at Stamford bridge will be remembered as he didn't reach his potential and failed to lead the blues attacking line.

He was loaned out to ac Milan in 2014 and sold to the Italian heavyweight the next year.

alexis sanchez
Alexis sanchez was a fan favourite at arsenal soon after and one of the best players in the league

He made more than 110 appearances for the gunners and scored over 60 goals and forming an excellent partnership with Mezut ozil.

After months of speculation over his future, he joined rivals Manchester United in a swap deal involving henrikh mkhitaryan and was the given the famous number 7 at old Trafford.

He made over 30 appearances for the red devils and scored only 3 times, He was sent to inter milan the following season after failing to re-create his former goalscoring ability.

Robinho

He joined Manchester city from real Madrid for a reported €32 million after the takeover in 2008 and was seen as a franchise player.

He didn't settle in at Manchester city and with the arrival of other capable signings, he was moved out on loan to Ac Milan and was subsequently sold later on to the Italian heavyweights

Philippe coutinho

Phillipe coutinho joined Barcelona in the summer of 2018 after a string of good performances for liverpool and was signed for a reported €135 million as he was seen as the perfect heir to Andres iniesta.

His career quickly went downward as he was sent on loan to German heavyweight Bayern Munich in 2020 where he also failed to live up to his former self and he is now playing out on loan again under former teammate Steven Gerrard at Aston villa.

Another notable mention is Ousmane dembele who joined Barcelona in the summer of 2017 after the departure of neymar for a reported €105 million, he has been an injury prone player and he is reportedly set to leave Barcelona on a free transfer.

They proved to be a risky move for the blaugrana giants which has been a crucial reason as to why they have a bad debt.

Feel free to add any other notable mention in the comments. Peace out.

I am still shocked by tbe way Torres flopped, I can't make much sense of it. Usually I could blame this on style or something along those lines, but Liverpool's style at the time wasn't that different from Chelsea's and the type of shots and chances he was missing were odd to see from the sniper kind of player he was prior.

I think Sanchez just lost his hunger during the end of his Arsenal stint, there seems to be a theme of doing that in Arsenal with their top earners.

He wasn't earning a big salary at the time since he only had six month left on his 2014 deal. He is doing great at inter Milan, i think the real problem is at Manchester united, over the years it has been toxic and players like dimaria cited so.

Nice post!

The price of players these days has become so skewed by market value that is driven less by their ability as a footballer and by celebrity status that it’s not surprising there are so many high price flops around!

The media plays a big role in this by hyping up players plus agent's fees over the years has gone through the roof.
