Confusion / Confusión - B.A Paris [ENG/ESP]
Hey Hive Book club readers!! Today I'll share with you this title, Confusion written by B.A. Paris.
This is the first time I heard about that author, while at the bookstore going through shelves the cover caught my attention, I couldn't read the synopsis on the back because it came together with another book from the same author, so all I could see were both covers and trust on the store's recommendation.
In this book, we follow the story of Cass, his husband Matthew, her best friend Rachel and a mysterious woman who was found dead.
It all starts with a gathering among friends, and when it's time to call it a night, Cass drives through a stormy night, she takes a shortcut to her home driving through the woods where she sees another car stopped ahead; she waits wondering if the driver needs help but after some minutes of waiting Cass resumes her way... next day she finds out that someone was murdered in the woods last night, and according to the news it was the woman Cass saw in the middle of the road through the woods.
Matthew hates when Cass takes that shortcut because it's dangerous, when he expresses his relief that Cass never uses that road or else she could had been the dead woman, Cass decides not to tell him she was there and probably was the last person who saw her alive.
As days go by, Cass gets overwhelmed with guilt, specially after hearing that the mysterious woman was Jane, someone she knew from work and talked to her a few times, last time being not long ago and they both felt that a nice friendship would begin between them.
No one knows yet what happened to Jane, there's no clues as to what might happened to her, this makes Cass feel guiltier, but then she starts to get confused because she is forgetting things, first is all small details like leaving lights on when she was sure she turned them off, but soon it escalates to the point where she keeps getting packages that she bought but can't remember, she starts getting anonymous calls that creep her out... she's losing her mind and Matthew is getting tired of this.
Cass turns to Rachel, her best friend and tells her all about the mishaps, Rachel tries to be supportive but she notices how her friend is drifting away from sanity.
Cass gets help but the pills she takes to ease her mind make her feel sick, and to make things worse she's sure someone has been breaking into her home when Matthew is away. The couple decide to install an alarm system and when the technician is supposed to go he doesn't show up, she calls the company and they tell them she cancelled it but she doesn't remember either.
When they finally get the alarm set, Cass keeps forgetting the code, she presses the numbers she's sure is the right code but it never works.
In the meantime, investigations about Jane's murder is stuck, Cass now isn't so sure of what she saw and which day, she's doubtful of going to the police as a witness because she waited a long time and she doesn't trust her memory anymore.
Finally things get a twist when after having lunch at a restaurant with Rachel who suddenly left in a hurry, a group of guys approach Cass at her table in order to give her a cellphone Rachel dropped by accident, the guys tell her that they tried to reach her friend but she was fast but saw she was here with Cass before leaving.
Cass doesn't recognize the cellphone as Rachel's, this one is old and Rachel always carries a more modern one. She starts to read the messages to get a clue of who the owner might be and to her surprise she sees that there's only a conversation with one number, one she knows well... Matthew's.
Going through the whole conversation she finds out that it's all been a cruel set up to make her get rid of her, turns out Rachel and Matthew had an affair and Jane knew all about it, Rachel found out Jane was going to tell Cass the truth and asked her to hear her side of the story first, Rachel told Jane she would wait for her in the middle of the road to talk privately... Rachel saw Cass' car passing by and waiting for a while, she isn't sure if Cass saw her or only Jane but she wasn't going to take any chances... after killing Jane, Rachel along with Matthew elaborated a plan to make Cass seem like an unreliable witness and also giving Matthew the perfect excuse to leave his wife in order to be with Rachel.
The cheater husband and not so best friend where the ones changing the alarm code, calling anonymously, ordering merchandise on Cass' behalf, breaking into her home and moving things around... all of this just because of an affair...
At some parts the book makes you feel like going in circles, taking a long time to uncover the truth which gets predictable by the middle of the story, but it leaves you satisfied when reading all of Cass' payback when she uses the cellphone in her advantage tricking both Matthew and Rachel and making them confess and pay for their crime.
The writer is great with details, she leaves clues all around that at first are hard to notice but in the end it all gets connected pretty well.
