Surprising hair myth debunked

avatar

Hello ladies of hive! How are you all doing today? Some days back, I watched a youtube video where two dermatologists debunked some popular hair myths. Some which I still don't believe are myths and others a very funny thing to know that people actually believed are true.

So here is to share with you some of the myths debunked in that video.

Hair grows faster when constantly trimmed...myth!

I found this a useful and surprising one though. I guess the myth debunk video was actually suggested since I had been googling about how often one should trim one's ends. After watching that video, I realised that ends should be trimmed only if necessary. Like when damages like split ends, heat damage, chemical damage and the rest are suspected. I realised there is no point in trimming obviously healthy hair. However, you all know from my last post that I recently chopped my hair and that's because I had a lot of knotted ends as well as chemical damaged hair from months ago when I used to relax my hair.

Hair is said to grow around half an inch a month and cutting it won't speed up the process. On average we have 120,000 hair follicles on our scalp and they are all going through different hair cycle. Check out anagene, catagene, telogene and exogen for more explanation on this. Right now on your scalp, most hair will be in the growth phase while others are shedding phase.

You have dandruff because your scalp is dry...myth!

I'm as shocked as you are with this myth. I mentioned this in my previous post and a few people were surprised too. Even I could have sworn that the reason I'll ever have any dandruff is if i don't oil my scalp. The dermatologist's explanation to this was that dandruff isn't a dry scalp problem. Its an overgrowth of an oil loving yeast. The dandruff causing organism on the hair is an oil loving one and hence the more oily your scalp is, if present, the more these organisms thrive and this means more dandruffs. This does not insinuate keeping the scalp dry. I guess, it means to get rid of Dandruff and maintain moderate oiling of the scalp. Talk about when too much of a good thing is bad!

Shampooing causes extra hair fall…myth!

This one is new to me. I have never heard of this myth before but yeah, do let me know what you think of this one in the comment session. Did you think shampoo makes the hair go away? Or you probably had an instance with a bad shampoo? Feel free to let us know in the comment session so that we may learn. You'll be amazed how helpful your comment can be to another lady in the community.

Pulling Grey Hairs Makes Them Grow Back...myth!

Ah! This one is a popular myth. I remember growing up, I'll always secretly pull off any gray hair I see on my mommy's scalp when helping her take down her braids. If she knew I did that she wouldn't allow it. She would always say pulling it makes them multiply. I never agreed to it and I'm happy to know I was right and secretly pulling it off then was not the reason she now has head full or grey hair. Lol. But damn! I could have left her bald if I remained her hair dresser till this day.

Split-End Repair Is Possible...myth!

This one to me is a common sense myth. I can't even think of any possible way a split hair would get repaired. Like, sis! How possible is that?! Lols. Once hair is out of the hair follicle, it is out. There is no way a damaged hair can be made better unless it is trimmed out. Hairs as a matter of facts are dead cells from the hair follicles. These dead cells get hardened, keratinized, and pigmented. And the lifespan of a hair strand is up to five years. Now, the probability that these hairs will live up to that time, to me, is a matter of maintenance. This very myth makes me want to imagine a naturalister trying to formulate a solution for glueing together split ends.

Thanks for reading.

I've had long hair all of my life with the exception of once when I was expecting my son. I had cut it into a pixie type style. I'm older now, and even though there is this unwritten rule that 'women over 40 need to cut their hair short', I don't! It's over 3' long and has been 4' long before. (I cut it back some in self defense to those split ends you mentioned). There are days that when I comb my hair after washing it, I'm sure I'm going bald! Alas, so far, I haven't which must mean I'm in those hair shedding stages with some of them. I shampoo daily and still have hair. I guess I might be living proof of what your research has found.

Thank you for sharing @ozohu, and have a lovely day!

Hahaha I enjoyed reading your take ma'am.

That unwritten rule about older women cutting their hair low is so true. Infact, I plan to do that in my twilight God willing.

Thanks for engaging!

Thank you @ozohu! I suspect I will never cut it unless I HAVE to. Take care!
