Trip to La Alberca, the valley of Las Batuecas [Eng][Esp]

The road north to Peña de Francia and the so-called Hurdes took me to the border of the provinces of Salamanca and Cáceres, to the valley of Las Batuecas, where I was concentrating my visits to the towns of this region these days. To the south of the province of Salamanca, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, lies this beautiful and picturesque town, declared a historic-artistic site for quite a few years, La Alberca. The best access to the town is via the SA-201 roads if you come from the north, from Salamanca, or via the EX-204 road coming from the south through the province of Cáceres. When I entered this region I found myself driving through an area with quite a few curves and a lot of vegetation. At times the trees on the road were very dense and resembled driving when you enter some tunnels. I entered a higher area that went down to the valley where the town of La Alberca is and was called Las Batucas, a name it takes from its river, a tributary of the Alagón. The lower part of the mountain range that I could see from the road and from some viewing points was a garden of native species such as oaks, holm oaks, chestnuts and pines. There was another part that I crossed where you could see those stairs full of olive trees and the king of the area, the cherry tree. From one of those viewing points you could see a large part of the valley and in the background the so-called Peña de Francia or highest peak in the area.

El camino hacia el norte a la Peña de Francia y a las llamadas Hurdes me llevó al limita de las provincias de Salamanca y Cáceres, al valle de Las Batuecas, donde esos días estaba concentrando mis visitas a los pueblos de esta región. Al sur de la provincia de Salamanca, en la comunidad autónoma de Castilla y León, se encuentra este precioso y pintoresco pueblo declarado conjunto histórico artístico desde hace bastantes años, la Alberca. El mejor acceso a la villa es por las carreteras SA-201 si se viene del norte, de Salamanca o por la EX-204 carretera que viene del sur por la provincia de Cáceres. Cuando entre en esta región me encontré conduciendo por una zona con bastantes curvas y mucha vegetación. Por momentos la arboleda del camino era muy cerrada y se asemejaba a la conducción cuando entras en algunos túneles. Entré en una zona más elevada que bajaba hasta el valle donde está la población de la Alberca y que se llamaba las batucas, nombre que toma de su río, afluente del Alagón. La parte baja de la sierra que podía observar desde la carretera y alguna parada en miradores era un vergel de especies autóctonas como robles, encinas, castaños y pinos. Había otra parte que atravesé que se podían ver esas escaleras llenas de olivos y el rey de la zona, el cerezo. En uno de esos miradores se podía ver una gran parte del valle y al fondo la llamada Peña de Francia o pico más elevado de la zona.

When I arrived at La Alberca I parked the car on a flat area at the entrance to the town. As soon as I got out I could see that I was surrounded by cherry trees and fields, small family gardens very well organized and arranged. A street that made a slight slope took me into the town and the first impressions I got were how picturesque it was and why this town has been declared an asset of artistic and tourist interest. When I arrive at one of the places I visit I always like to soak up a bit of its history, where it was born or emerged and what its development has been, its evolution to have a more precise idea of ​​where I am. In the case of La Alberca there was some sign of an early Roman settlement and it gave me an idea of ​​where it came from. First of all I like to wander through the streets and have that first contact with some of the people I see on my way. As it is a small town some of its inhabitants are more approachable when it comes to talking since it seems like you are in their own home, I felt like an honored guest.

Al llegar a La Alberca deje aparcado el coche en una zona llana de la entrada al pueblo. Nada más bajarme pude ver que estaba rodeado de cerezos y de campos de cultivo, pequeños huertos familiares muy bien ordenados y dispuestos. Una calle que hacia una pequeña cuesta me adentraba en la población y las primeras impresiones que me daba era lo pintoresco y el porqué este pueblo ha sido declaro un bien de interés artístico y turístico. Cuando llego a alguno de los lugares que visito siempre me gusta empaparme un poco de su historia, de donde nace o surge y cuál ha sido su desarrollo, su evolución para tener una idea más precisa de donde estoy. En el caso de la Alberca había algún signo de un primer asentamiento romano y me daba una idea de donde procedía. Primeramente me gusta callejear por las calles y tener ese primer contacto con algunas personas que veo en mi camino. Al tratarse de un pueblo pequeño algunos de sus habitantes son más cercanos a la hora de conversar ya que pareciera que estas en su propia casa, me sentía como un invitado de honor.

I still had a lot to discover and I headed to the main square, the centre of the town. Several stone arcades surrounded the square on each side and wood abounded on the balconies and buildings. I sat on the terraces to have a coffee and chat with the very friendly and welcoming local people. The sight of those pretty balconies in the square with their colours, their wooden construction and their decorations with pots, flowers and plants was very beautiful and fit perfectly with the architectural surroundings of the place.

Me quedaba mucho que descubrir aun y me dirigí a la plaza mayor, al centro del pueblo. Varios soportales de piedra rodeaban la plaza por sus laterales y la madera abundaba en los balcones y las construcciones. Me senté en las terrazas a tomar un café y a conversar con la gente del lugar muy amable y acogedora. La visión de aquellos bonitos balcones de la plaza con sus colores, su fabricación en madera y sus adornos con macetas, flores y plantas resultaba de gran belleza y conjuntaban perfectamente con ese entrono arquitectónico del lugar.

I continued wandering around and some streets, the most central and oldest in the area, had that special charm, that mix that made them different. The fusion of stone and wood in that environment was perfect. I stopped to see some small shops selling typical products from the region, which kept me entertained for a while as they were charming locals and people. Once again, the blending and fusion in this case between the shop and its surroundings was perfect. Baskets, hats, ham or sausages, fruit and empanadas in a perfect mix for the sight and the senses.

Seguí callejeando y algunas calles, las más céntricas y antiguas del lugar tenían ese encanto especial, esa mezcla que las hacia diferentes. La fusión de piedra y madera en ese entorno era perfecta. Me pare a ver algunos pequeños negocios de productos típicos de la región, aquello me tuvo un buen rato ya que eran unos locales y unas gentes encantadoras. Una vez más el mimetismo y la fusión en este caso entre el comercio y su entrono era perfecto. Cestas, sombreros, jamón o embutidos, frutas y empanadas en una mezcla perfecta para la vista y los sentidos.

The visit could not be complete without going to the lower part of the town, where I had seen a stream and the meadows and fields. I went down one of the streets that led from the centre to this area and arrived there. Chestnut, oak and cherry trees were abundant and covered a large part of this territory. The beauty of these orchards, perfectly fused with nature and ecological, captured my attention and were a clear example of respect and sustained maintenance of our existence as a species.

La visita no podía estar completa sino me acercaba a la parte baja del pueblo, donde había visto un riachuelo y los prados y campos. Baje por una de las calles que iba desde el centro a esta zona y llegue a él. Los castaños, robles y cerezos abundaban y cubrían gran parte de este territorio. La belleza de esos huertos fusionados perfectamente con la naturaleza y ecológicos captaron toda mi atención y eran un claro ejemplo de respeto y mantenimiento sostenido de nuestro mantenimiento como especie.
