Trip to Sevilla, a special color [Eng][Esp]

This trip took me from the centre of the country to the south, to the autonomous community of Andalusia, with the intention of visiting some of its most emblematic cities, this time to Seville. The Andalusian region is characterised by being located in the south of the European continent and being a meeting point for many civilisations, a cosmopolitan city full of history and charm. I headed along the southern motorway that connects the centre with the south of the peninsula, passing through different points and important cities such as Aranjuez, Córdoba or Cádiz. After several forks to reach the city, I reached a junction from which there were different options to get to the capital. Entering Seville via the ring roads put me on a large avenue that led almost to the historic centre after crossing the Guadalquivir River, which at this point is navigable from its mouth to the city itself. Founded by Phoenicians and Tartessians and later Romanised by Seville, all the civilisations that marked the history and future of this country passed through. After centuries of Muslim rule, Seville has retained many of the architectural and urban features of this period, which give the city its characteristic architectural features. It later became the economic capital of the Spanish Empire during the time of the Catholic Monarchs with the conquest of America. Today, the city of Seville is one of the most important centres in the whole country and also one of the most populated in Europe.

Este viaje me llevo desde el centro del país hacia el sur a la comunidad autónoma de Andalucía con la intención de recorrer algunas de sus ciudades más emblemáticas, en esta ocasión a Sevilla. La región andaluza se caracteriza por estar situada al sur del continente europeo y ser punto de encuentro de muchas civilizaciones, ciudad cosmopolita y llena de historia y encanto. Me dirigí por la autovía del sur que conecta el centro con el sur de la península pasando por diferentes puntos y ciudades importantes como Aranjuez, Córdova o Cádiz. Después de varias bifurcaciones para llegar a la ciudad llegue a un nudo desde donde partían diferentes opciones para llegar a la capital. La entrada en Sevilla por las circunvalaciones me metió en una gran avenida que llevaba casi hasta el centro histórico después de cruzar el rio Guadalquivir que en este punto es navegable desde su desembocadura a la misma ciudad. Fundada por fenicios y tartesios y después romanizada por Sevilla pasaron todas las civilizaciones que marcaron la historia y el devenir de este país. Conserva, después de haber estado siglos el mundo musulmán, muchas características arquitectónicas y urbanas de este periodo que da a la ciudad esos aspectos arquitectónicos tan característicos de esta época. Posteriormente se convierte en la capital económica del imperio español en la época de los reyes católicos con la conquista de América. Actualmente la ciudad de Sevilla es uno de los núcleos más importantes de todo el país y también de las más habitadas de Europa.

The city of Seville has a special charm and I suggest spending several days there, as it is a large population centre and there are many things to see during this period. One of the things that has caught my attention the most is its light, its colours and its mixture that is evident when walking through its streets and squares. The people in the city are cheerful, very open and friendly. The horse-drawn carriages that travel and take visitors to the most emblematic places give it that special southern touch that invites you to take a ride in them and makes it seem as if time has stopped on this special walk through its streets. A walk along the banks of the river, its bridges, the Real Maestranza or the most popular and well-known buildings make this walk unforgettable. One of the streets that impressed me the most is the one that runs along the embassy buildings that appear online and that amazed me for its architecture.

La ciudad de Sevilla posee un encanto especial y sugiero para visitarla pasarse en ellas varios días ya que es un núcleo de población grande y son muchas las cosas que se pueden visitar en este periodo. Una de las cosas que más me ha llamado la atención es su luz, sus colores y su mezcla que queda patente en el caminar por sus calles y plazas. Las gentes en la ciudad son alegres, muy abiertas y amistosas. Los coches de caballos que recorren y llevan a los visitantes a los puntos más emblemáticos le dan ese toque tan sureño y especial que invita a un recorrido en ellos y que parece que el tiempo se haya detenido en este especial paseo por sus calles. Un recorrido por las orillas del rio, sus puentes, la Real Maestranza o los edificios más populares y conocidos hacen que este paseo sea inolvidable. Una de las calles que más me impresiono es la que recorre los edificios de las embajadas que aparecen en línea y que me maravillaron por su arquitectura.

I stopped as I walked along some of the streets to look at the buildings and facades of the city. Some had been modified over the years or had been carefully renovated and restored, respecting the essence of when they were built. The city also presented in some central areas a fusion of modern styles with the old part of the city, giving it an ideal union between the old and the new, which made it very clear to me where this beautiful town wanted to go.

Me iba parando según avanzaba mi recorrido por algunas de las calles a contemplar edificios y fachadas de la ciudad. Algunas modificadas con el paso de los años o reformadas y restauradas de forma muy cuidadosa respetando la esencia de cuando se construyeron. La ciudad también presentaba por algunas zonas céntricas una fusión de estilos modernos con la parte vieja de la ciudad que le daba una unión ideal entre los antiguo y lo nuevo que me dejaba muy claro hacia donde quería ir esta hermosa villa.

I arrived at the historic centre where a citadel and wall, which was right next to the cathedral, welcomed me. I assumed that it must have been a fortification that was once the main entrance to the city centre and protected the city. The remains of the wall and its main gate communicated directly with the square where many visitors were amazed by how that part of history was fused with the beautiful cathedral of the city.

Llegue al centro histórico donde una alcazaba y muralla que se encontraba justo al lado de la catedral me recibía. Supuse que antiguamente debía ser una fortificación destina a ser entrada principal al núcleo urbano y protegía a la ciudad. Los restos de la muralla y su puerta principal comunicaban directamente con la plaza donde muchos visitantes quedábamos asombrados por cómo se fusionaba aquella parte de la historia con la hermosa catedral de la ciudad.

The cathedral was a UNESCO World Heritage Site and visiting it was another of my goals that day. From the outside it was impressive for its enormity and its architecture, on one of its sides stood the emblematic tower of the Giralda, symbol of the town. Inside it was even more impressive with those columns, the atriums and the beauty of its porticos, its height and the altarpieces. I walked around the cathedral without trying to miss a detail and every step I took showed me the unique beauty of this construction. It took me quite a while to visit it, almost the whole morning of that day and I tried to get some souvenirs of that very special visit.

La catedral era una joya patrimonio de la humanidad declarada por la UNESCO y recorrerla fue otro de mis objetivos ese día. Por fuera era impresionante por su enormidad y su arquitectura, en uno de sus laterales se levantaba la emblemática torre de la Giralda, símbolo de la villa. Por dentro aun más impresionante con esas columnas, los atrios y la belleza de su pórticos, su altura y los retablos. Recorrí la catedral sin tratar de perder detalle y cada paso que daba me mostraba la belleza singular de esta construcción. Me llevo bastante tiempo visitarla, casi toda la mañana de ese día y trate de conseguir algunos recuerdos de aquella visita tan especial.

The city of Seville and its charm do not leave anyone who visits it indifferent and it is a beautiful example of the fusion of cultures and idiosyncrasies of the regions of southern Europe.
