Trip to Alburquerque, Luna Castle [Eng][Esp]
Close to the Portuguese border with the province of Badajoz in the autonomous community of Extremadura is the town of Alburquerque and its castle, the so-called Luna Castle. As I have mentioned on other occasions, some of my trips to fortifications, walls or castles are part of a work of collecting data and images and of my desire to leave a record of these historical wonders of constructions throughout the globe. Many of these castles that I publish are the result of gathering all the pieces that are needed to make a small collection of trips and memories of them. Spain is a country that has hundreds of them and that can be found in different states of conservation. The styles of these are also very different due to the forms and time of construction. Many times old Roman or Muslim fortifications are modified in the Middle Ages to build fortresses and this gives them a unique and special character. In the case of Alburquerque, the castle was built in the Middle Ages in the midst of the conflict between Moors and Christians, it was a hot spot for changes in power in this region.
To get to Alburquerque I left the city of Cáceres heading south west on the national road N-523 and then joined the regional road EX-214 which would take me to my destination. When I arrived several kilometres earlier I stopped on a plain where I could see the mountain on which the castle dominated the whole region. An area of cork oaks and holm oaks which later led me to find out that the name of Alburquerque itself may have to do with those cork oaks which have been used since ancient times to extract cork from their bark. When I got to the town, after crossing it, several signs led directly to the base of the castle and to a large car park which made it easy to leave the car very close to the entrance of the castle. If anything, I headed inside, starting to climb a steep slope with the first inner wall of the fortress and which led me towards the towers and the base of the castle.
The entrance to the inner courtyards led me to one where there was a small chapel that was the church of the castle dedicated to Santa Maria. A huge space flanked by the towers and a side building was the courtyard where knights and soldiers had their place of military, cavalry or weapons training. The building looked powerful with that impregnable granite stone, its height and its position on top of the wall made this bastion a strategic place impossible to take. I spoke with one of the castle guides who explained to me that there is a city in the United States twinned with the town of Albuquerque and with the same name, which did not surprise me because this is common in many cities on other continents.
The route was complicated because it seemed like a labyrinth with many stairs that led to the top of the wall and that connected some towers with others. The castle was in excellent condition and I was also able to enter the main tower where the feudal lord governed the region. A complete palace almost entirely preserved and which becomes one of the main attractions of this castle in Luna, named after one of the surnames of the builder Álvaro de Luna of the Order of Santiago and contestable of Castile. The predominant styles are a Romanesque style that is almost finished, what experts call late and the Gothic style. I must tell you that it is one of the most impressive castles I have ever seen in this style.
