Eurovenezuelan Jazz Festival - My experience

Last October 8th I had the pleasure of attending one of the concerts that were part of the II Eurovenezuelan Jazz Festival, an event that included a series of concerts held on weekends in different venues in Caracas.

The festival took place from Friday September 29th to Sunday October 15th, 2023, a period where besides the concerts, masterclasses were given by the invited musicians, some were open only to musicians and others allowed access to the general public with prior registration.

For my part, I only was able to attend the concert on Sunday, October 8, at the CNASPM (Social Action Center for Music), where I was able to see the presentations of the guest musicians: Samy Thiébault (France), Vladimir Quintero (Venezuela), Randal Corsen (Curaçao) and Tania Kross (Curaçao).

The concert was really good, the Simon Bolivar Hall was completely full and the performance of the musicians was excellent. I must say that at the beginning, as the title had the word "Jazz" in it, this made me think that the Simon Bolivar Big Band was going to play, since all the concerts I had been to at the main venue of El Sistema are with the Big Band, but to my surprise the presentations of the foreign musicians were in small format, with only 4 musicians. Only the Venezuelan Vladimir Quintero could afford the luxury of having a large format consisting of: bongo, timbal, tumbadora, piano, bass, güira, trumpet and trombone.

The small format kept me curious and made me notice that things have changed in El Sistema, since they are now willing to open the doors to proposals of different formats and musical genres, which also don't belong to the institution, which for me means good news, since there is more visibility for new projects within the spaces of El Sistema.

Another thing that caught my attention was the theme of the festival, if you look at the title it connotes the union between Europe and Venezuela, using Jazz as a common language, that led me to think at first that the themes would be very jazzy, but it turned out that what makes this festival different is that it brings together a group of foreign artists who are dedicated to making a re-interpretation of the sounds of Venezuelan music, it's a unique festival where you can hear live a European playing joropo or any other Venezuelan rhythm.

As a Venezuelan I found it touching to know that there are foreign people who are interested in our music, sounds and culture, to the point of interpreting it and traveling to our country to play their works, it's nice to see how Venezuela and its culture have reached so many people in so many parts of the world.

I hope that more events like these are repeated in the country, it's good to know that jazz is not as dead as I thought, because it is still committed to create spaces for this musical genre in Venezuela.

El pasado 8 de Octubre tuve el placer de asistir a uno de los conciertos que formaron parte del II Festival Eurovenezolano de Jazz, evento que comprendía una serie de conciertos realizados los fines de semana en distintos escenarios de Caracas.

El festival se realizó entre el Viernes 29 de Septiembre hasta el Domingo 15 de Octubre de 2023, periodo donde además de los conciertos se dio apertura a masterclass dictadas por los músicos invitados, algunas eran abiertas solo para músicos y otras permitían el acceso al público general con previa inscripción.

Por mi parte, logré asistir únicamente al concierto del domingo 8 de Octubre, en el Centro de Acción Social por la Música, donde pude ver las presentaciones de los músicos invitados: Samy Thiébault (Francia), Vladimir Quintero (Venezuela),Randal Corsen (Curaçao) y Tania Kross (Curaçao).

Con respecto al concierto de verdad que estuvo muy bueno, la Sala Simón Bolivar se llenó por completo y la ejecución de los músicos fue excelente. Debo decir que en principio, como el título llevaba la palabra “Jazz” esto me hizo pensar que iba a tocar la Big Band Simon Bolivar, ya que todos los conciertos a los que había ido en la sede principal de El Sistema son con la Big Band, pero para mi sorpresa las presentaciones de los músicos extranjeros fueron en formato pequeño, de 4 músicos nada más. Solo el venezolano Vladimir Quintero pudo darse el lujo de tener un formato grande que constaba de: bongo, timbal, tumbadora, piano, bajo, güira, trompeta y trombón.

El tema de los formatos pequeños me mantuvo curiosa y me hizo notar que las cosas en El Sistema han cambiado, ya que ahora están dispuestos a abrirle las puertas a propuestas de distintos formatos y géneros musicales, que además no pertenecen a la institución, cosa que me resulta una buena noticia ya que hay vinsibilización para proyectos nuevos dentro de los espacios de El Sistema.

Otra cosa que llamó mi atención fue la temática del festival, si se fijan en el título este connota la unión entre Europa y Venezuela, haciendo uso del Jazz como idioma en común, eso me llevó a pensar en un principio que los temas serian muy jazzísticos, pero resultó ser que lo que hace distinto a este festival es que reúne a un grupo de artistas extranjeros que se han dedicado a hacer una re-interpretación de los sonidos de la música venezolana, por lo cual es un festival único donde puedes escuchar en vivo a un europeo tocando canciones con ritmos venezolanos, como el joropo por ejemplo, junto con una composición con lenguaje jazz.

Como venezolana me pareció conmovedor saber que hay personas extranjeras que se interesan por nuestra música, sonidos y cultura, al punto de interpretarla y viajar hasta nuestro país para tocar sus obras, resulta bonito ver cómo Venezuela y su cultura han llegado a tantas personas en tantos lugares del mundo.

Espero que mas eventos como estos se repitan en el país, es bueno saber que el jazz no esta tan muerto como creía, pues aun se apuesta por crear espacios para este género musical en Venezuela.
