Penha Garcia - Castelo de Penha Garcia & Igreja Matriz / Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
We had never visited Beira Baixa and we were very lucky with the dates we chose because not only were there not many tourists, it was hot (on the day of this visit even more so).
We left the house with the idea of finding a place to cool off as the day was getting hot. We looked around and the first suggestion (and the closest) that came to us was the river beach of Pego.

It took us more than half an hour to get there because despite being close, the route is along the national highway and there are plenty of curves.
Penha Garcia, a small village located in the mountains with the same name, surprised with its granite houses and basalt paving.
The landscape around the village is simply stunning, the green hills and rock formations create an idyllic setting.
As soon as we started to climb we came across a military tank or tank in a small square that is also a viewpoint. There was a cafe right in front of us and we tried to figure out how it had gotten there.

Around 30 years ago, the Armed Forces donated destroyed vehicles to localities that wanted to use them as decorations. At that time, the parish council requested one to be placed in this square (at this time it was called Largo do 25 de Abril) as a form of tribute to the combatants of the Ultramar War.
The thermometer showed 40 degrees and we returned to the car but not before stopping at the community fountain to cool off a little. There was no one to see on the street apart from the occasional couple who were walking there too.

While we were looking for the way to go to the beach we found the Igreja Matriz. Outside, still in good condition, there is a sink, or so it seems.
In addition to the church and the tank, Penha Garcia is famous for its natural landscapes and ichnofossils, which are fossilized footprints and tracks of prehistoric animals. These fossils, embedded in the rocks throughout the valley, are a true wonder for lovers of geology and natural history.

There is a 2.7 km trail where we can observe these specimens and that on a spring or autumn day we would have done so. But today was not that day...
I'll be back tomorrow with more information about this beautiful place and how much it has to offer.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
