Park - Porta do Mezio - Parque Nacional Peneda Gerês / Riding Portugal

On my last family outing to Parque do Mezio, located in the heart of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, in Arcos de Valdevez, I had the opportunity to explore one of the most serene and enchanting places in the region. The day began with a clear sky, although full of dark clouds that threatened rain, but even so, the feeling was of fresh air and inviting for a leisurely walk. The park, known for its immersion in nature, has become a true refuge for those seeking a peaceful experience, surrounded by the beauty of the mountains and local vegetation.

No meu último passeio em família pelo Parque do Mezio, situado no coração do Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, em Arcos de Valdevez, tive a oportunidade de explorar um dos locais mais serenos e encantadores da região. O dia começou com um céu limpo, embora carregado de nuvens escuras que ameaçavam a chuva, mas mesmo assim, a sensação era de um ar fresco e convidativo para um passeio sem pressas. O parque, conhecido pela sua imersão na natureza, tornou-se um verdadeiro refúgio para quem procura uma experiência tranquila, rodeada pela beleza das montanhas e vegetação local.

When we arrived at Parque do Mezio, the first space that caught our attention was the garden area, right at the entrance. The environment was perfectly harmonized with the surrounding nature. The land, well maintained and decorated with flowerbeds, looked like a living painting. The flowers, typical of the region, were arranged to create a spectacle of colors, from vibrant shades of yellow and purple to the soft green of the plants that made up the scene. It was fascinating to observe how each flower was there, almost like a painting made by nature itself. Near the flowerbeds, some butterflies and bees flew from flower to flower, as if they were also enjoying the beauty of the place.

Ao chegarmos ao Parque do Mezio, o primeiro espaço que nos chamou a atenção foi a área dos jardins, logo à entrada. O ambiente estava perfeitamente harmonizado com a natureza ao redor. O terreno, bem cuidado e decorado com canteiros floridos, parecia um quadro vivo. As flores, típicas da região, estavam dispostas de forma a criar um espetáculo de cores, desde os tons vibrantes de amarelo e roxo até ao suave verde das plantas que compunham o cenário. Era fascinante observar como cada flor estava ali, quase como uma pintura feita pela própria natureza. Perto dos canteiros, algumas borboletas e abelhas voavam de flor em flor, como se estivessem a aproveitar também a beleza do lugar.

Our daughter was completely absorbed by the space, running from one side to the other, but always stopping to admire the flowers and plants that caught her attention. “Look, mom, a giant flower!” — my daughter said, pointing to a plant with large white flowers, whose beauty made me think how nature is capable of creating things so perfect and simple at the same time, as my husband says, nature is the true architect.

A nossa filha estava completamente absorvida pelo espaço, correndo de um lado para o outro, mas sempre parando para admirar as flores e as plantas que lhes chamavam a atenção. “Olha, mãe, uma flor gigante!” — dizia a minha filha, apontando para uma planta de grandes flores brancas, cuja beleza me fez pensar como a natureza é capaz de criar coisas tão perfeitas e simples ao mesmo tempo, como diz o meu marido, a natureza é a verdadeira arquiteta.

We continued our walk and along the way, scattered throughout the space, we found some sculptures of emblematic animals of the region. They were artistic representations of species that inhabit the Peneda-Gerês National Park, such as the famous cows, the snake and the eagle, among others. Each sculpture was meticulously positioned so that it looked as if the animals were actually walking through the area, as if they had materialized there just to welcome us. The sculptures, made from a mixture of different materials, were much more than simple decorative objects; they seemed to convey a sense of respect for the region's fauna, creating a direct connection between visitors and the beings that live there.

Continuámos o nosso passeio e ao longo do caminho, espalhadas por todo o espaço encontramos algumas esculturas de animais emblemáticos da região. Eram representações artísticas de espécies que habitam o Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, como as famosas vacas, a cobra e a águia entre outros. Cada escultura estava meticulosamente posicionada, de forma a parecer que os animais estavam realmente a caminhar pela área, como se se tivessem materializado ali apenas para nos dar as boas-vindas. As esculturas, feitas de uma mistura de diferentes materiais eram muito mais do que simples objetos decorativos, pareciam transmitir uma sensação de respeito pela fauna da região, criando uma ligação direta entre os visitantes e os seres que ali habitam.

The walk through the garden area took us to a small lake, whose waters reflected the cloudy sky. The calm of the place was so captivating that we almost felt part of the environment, as if we were living inside a natural painting. The tranquility of the lake, with its almost still waters, contrasted with the soft sound of the wind rustling the leaves of the trees and the occasional song of birds nearby.

A caminhada pela zona dos jardins levou-nos até um pequeno lago, cujas águas refletiam o céu nublado. A calmaria do lugar era de tal forma envolvente que quase nos sentíamos parte do ambiente, como se estivéssemos a viver dentro de uma pintura natural. A tranquilidade do lago, com as suas águas quase imóveis, contrastava com o som suave do vento que mexia nas folhas das árvores e o ocasional canto dos pássaros nas proximidades.

With our stomachs starting to complain for more attention, we decided to continue to the park restaurant, a simple and cozy space, perfect for resting and enjoying a nice meal. The building blended harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. Inside, the atmosphere was rustic and cozy, with wooden tables and a fireplace that gave it a cozy feel, especially with the weather starting to cool down. The menu offered typical dishes from the region, and we chose something light but tasty: codfish à Gomes de Sá. The aroma of the food mixed with the freshness of the air, creating a delicious contrast. The experience was even more enjoyable because we were surrounded by the views of the mountains and the tranquility of the park.

Com o estômago a começar a reclamar por mais atenção, decidimos continuar até ao restaurante do parque, um espaço simples e acolhedor, perfeito para descansar e saborear uma bela refeição. A construção fundia-se de forma harmoniosa com a paisagem circundante. Dentro, o ambiente era rústico e acolhedor, com mesas de madeira e uma lareira que lhe conferia uma sensação de conforto, especialmente com o tempo que estava a começar a esfriar. O menu oferecia pratos típicos da região, e escolhemos algo leve, mas saboroso: bacalhau à Gomes de Sá. O aroma da comida misturava-se com a frescura do ar, criando um contraste delicioso. A experiência foi ainda mais agradável por estarmos rodeados pela vista das montanhas e pela tranquilidade do parque.

After our meal, we decided to take another walk around the grounds, this time exploring the trails that wound through the garden area. The daughter, still full of energy, went ahead jumping from one rock to another, while we observed the landscape that for a moment seemed untouched and preserved in time. The sky, now completely cloudy, seemed to have taken a break from the rain, allowing us to explore the place a little more without rushing.

Após a refeição, decidimos dar mais um passeio ao redor da área, desta vez explorando as trilhas que serpenteavam pela zona dos jardins. A filha, ainda cheia de energia, ia à frente saltando de uma pedra para a outra, enquanto nós íamos observando a paisagem que por momentos parecia intocada e preservada no tempo. O céu, agora completamente nublado, parecia ter dado uma pausa à chuva, permitindo-nos explorar mais um pouco o local sem pressas.

Parque do Mezio has undoubtedly proven to be a perfect place for those looking for a refuge from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Its combination of nature, art and tranquility creates a unique atmosphere, capable of enchanting any visitor, whether big or small. I, in particular, was amazed by the details of the space, from the flowerbeds of typical regional plants to the sculptures that celebrate local wildlife. It wasn't just a visit, it was a true immersion in the essence of nature, in a setting where beauty and peace merge in perfect harmony.

O Parque do Mezio revelou-se, sem dúvida, um local perfeito para quem procura um refúgio da agitação do dia-a-dia. A sua combinação de natureza, arte e tranquilidade cria uma atmosfera única, capaz de encantar qualquer visitante, seja ele grande ou pequeno. Eu, particularmente, fiquei maravilhada com os detalhes do espaço, desde os canteiros de plantas típicas da região até às esculturas que celebram a vida selvagem local. Não foi apenas uma visita, foi uma verdadeira imersão na essência da natureza, num cenário onde a beleza e a paz se fundem em perfeita harmonia.
