Mountain Landscapes - Parque Nacional Peneda Gerês / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

We decided, out of the blue, to explore a corner of the Peneda-Gerês National Park that none of us knew about. No big plans, just the desire to get lost in the mountains and let nature guide us. The afternoon was cloudy, but a cool breeze made the air light, almost like an invitation to adventure. We picked up our backpacks and continued on our way, certain that we would discover something new.
The idea was not to go on one of those long hikes into the unknown, especially since our daughter was with us, but just to go a little deeper into the forest and find a nice place to take a break while we snacked on some of the supplies we had in our backpacks.

Decidimos, assim de repente, explorar um canto do Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês que nenhum de nós conhecia. Sem grandes planos, apenas a vontade de nos perdermos na montanha e deixar que a natureza nos guiasse. A tarde estava nublada, mas uma brisa fresca tornava o ar leve, quase como um convite para a aventura. Pegámos nas mochilas e seguimos caminho, apenas com a certeza de que íamos descobrir algo novo.
A ideia não era fazer uma daquelas caminhadas extensas em direção ao desconhecido, até porque a nossa filha estava connosco, mas somente embrenharmo-nos um pouco na floresta e encontrar um lugar agradável para fazer uma pausa enquanto petiscávamos alguns dos mantimentos que levávamos nas mochilas.

Upon arriving, the first thing that hit me was the smell. A mixture of damp earth, moss and pine. The air had a freshness that filled our lungs in an almost purifying way. The sound was another delight, with the wind gliding through the trees, the murmur of a brook somewhere nearby, and every now and then the distant cry of an eagle. I felt small in the face of that vastness, but at the same time free, as if the world opened up before my eyes without barriers.

Ao chegar, a primeira coisa que me atingiu foi o cheiro. Um misto de terra húmida, musgo e pinho. O ar tinha um frescor que nos enchia os pulmões de uma forma quase purificadora. O som era outro encanto, com o vento a deslizar pelas árvores, o murmúrio de um riacho algures perto e, de vez em quando, o grito distante de uma águia. Senti-me pequena diante daquela vastidão, mas ao mesmo tempo livre, como se o mundo se abrisse diante dos meus olhos sem barreiras.

We walked up an old stone path, worn by time but still solid under our feet. The landscape was breathtaking, with huge slopes covered in green, deep valleys where the light filtered through the clouds, creating shadows and varying tones in the vegetation. At every turn of the path, a new piece of beauty revealed itself. We found a small lake hidden between the rocks, where the water was so crystal clear that you could see the small fish gliding gently by. The silence there was almost sacred, and for a while, no one said anything. We just stood there, absorbing that moment of absolute peace.

Fomos subindo por um trilho de pedra antiga, desgastada pelo tempo, mas ainda sólida sob os nossos pés. A paisagem era de cortar a respiração, com enormes encostas cobertas de verde, vales profundos onde a luz filtrava-se entre as nuvens, criando sombras e variados tons na vegetação. A cada curva do caminho, um novo pedaço de beleza revelava-se. Encontrámos um pequeno lago escondido entre as rochas, onde a água era tão cristalina que se viam os pequenos peixes a deslizar suavemente. O silêncio ali era quase sagrado, e por uns momentos, ninguém disse nada. Apenas ficámos ali, a absorver aquele instante de paz absoluta.

Halfway along the route, we came across a shepherd leading his small flock up the slopes. We exchanged a few words, he told us stories of other times, when that trail was used by travelers and traders who connected the mountain villages. There was something in his voice, in the way he looked at the mountain, that showed a deep respect for the land. It was one of those encounters that make us feel part of something bigger, as if, for a few moments, we also belonged to that place.

No meio do percurso, cruzámo-nos com um pastor que conduzia o seu pequeno rebanho pelas encostas. Trocámos umas palavras, ele contou-nos histórias de outros tempos, quando aquele trilho era percorrido por viajantes e comerciantes que ligavam as aldeias serranas. Havia algo na sua voz, na forma como olhava a montanha, que mostrava um respeito profundo pela terra. Foi um daqueles encontros que nos fazem sentir parte de algo maior, como se, por breves instantes, pertencêssemos também àquele lugar.

As we walked, I found myself reflecting on the simplicity of this moment. No rush, no distractions. Just us, the mountain and time that seemed to flow differently. At one of the highest points of the trail, we stopped to rest. The wind blew harder there, bringing with it an indescribable feeling of freedom. I closed my eyes for a moment and felt like I was on top of the world, far from everything, but at the same time so connected to the essential.

Enquanto caminhávamos, dei por mim a refletir sobre a simplicidade deste momento. Nada de pressas, nada de distrações. Apenas nós, a montanha e o tempo que parecia fluir de maneira diferente. Num dos pontos mais altos do trilho, parámos para descansar. O vento soprava com mais força ali, trazendo consigo uma sensação indescritível de liberdade. Fechei os olhos por um instante e senti-me como se estivesse no topo do mundo, longe de tudo, mas ao mesmo tempo tão conectado com o essencial.

The farewell was difficult. The descent was slow, almost as if none of us really wanted to leave. But we take with us more than just photos or memories, we take with us the feeling of having lived another one of those unique moments. Something that, even without words, will remain in your memory.

A despedida foi difícil. A descida fez-se devagar, quase como se nenhum de nós quisesse realmente sair dali. Mas levámos connosco mais do que fotos ou recordações, levámos a sensação de ter vivido mais um daqueles momentos únicos. Algo que, mesmo sem palavras, ficará guardado na memória.

We will definitely return to that place, but next time, who knows, with more time to explore every corner, to let the mountain show me, at its own pace, everything it still hides. Because there are places that call us to return, and Peneda-Gerês, that day, whispered exactly that to me.

Sem dúvida que voltaremos àquele local, mas da próxima vez, quem sabe, com mais tempo para explorar cada recanto, para deixar a montanha mostrar-me, ao seu ritmo, tudo o que ainda esconde. Porque há lugares que nos chamam para voltar, e a Peneda-Gerês, naquele dia, sussurrou-me exatamente isso.
