Mina de S.Domingos - Corte do Pinto / Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
We arrived at a beautiful river beach late in the afternoon, at that magical moment when the sun, about to disappear, paints the sky orange and pink. The golden light of the sunset was reflected in the calm waters and as there were few people it was possible to absorb the serenity of that moment.
The heat of the day was disappearing, being replaced by a light breeze that made the late afternoon even more pleasant.

The São Domingos Mine was one of the most important mining operations in the Alentejo, and today it is a place of memories, but also of leisure and nature.
The vast area that was once buzzing with the activity of miners and machinery is now silent. The ruins of old mining structures, scattered across the landscape, tell the stories of those who worked and lived here for many generations.

The river beach (also known as Albufeira da Tapada Grande) is a true refuge, surrounded by trees and with a landscape that seems to have no end. There are several umbrellas on steps to escape the heat of the sun during the day. A cafe and a small stand that allows you to rent boats and paddle boards for fans of the sport.
There is also a caravan park where many had their trailers. Everything is very well looked after and clean.

At the foot of the beach is the village which, we were told, was created out of nothing in 1854 so that mining exploration could develop.
The village was built with the aim of housing workers and their families, and still maintains the typical appearance of working-class villages of the time, with simple, aligned houses, in contrast to the imposing but worn-out structures of the old mine, which was deactivated in 1966.

Another place full of history and full of traces of it, but full of charm and all the tranquility that Alentejo can bring us.

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health
