Chaves - Alto Tâmega - Zona Ribeirinha / Riding Portugal
Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
Chaves, a city full of history, tradition and natural beauty, was once again our destination. This time, the visit had a special flavor: we decided to bring our daughter's grandmothers to share a part of our hobby with them, and mainly to create unforgettable memories in a setting that, in itself, is already charming. Our exploration focused on the Riverside Zone and, to our surprise, we discovered two new spots that made the experience even more unique.

We begin with a peaceful walk along the riverside area of Chaves, a place where the Tâmega River is imposing but at the same time serene. The sound of the water and the lush green landscape make this place perfect for those looking for a calm environment to relax or simply admire the beauty that nature has to offer. On this new tour, we found two corners still unknown to us from the last visit, both with stunning views of the river and surrounded by century-old trees that provided refreshing shade.

After a walk through the center, we decided to cross the iconic Roman Bridge of Chaves, a monument that, with its robust and historic structure, dates back to the Roman period. The bridge is one of the city's great attractions and a symbol of its long history. It is said to have been built in the 1st century AD, during the empire of Caesar Augustus, and serves as a vital link between the two banks of the River Tâmega. The mystery and grandeur of the Roman Bridge have something magical about them, as if time had stopped there, preserving the memories of ancient civilizations. When you cross it, it’s impossible not to feel like you’re traveling back in time.

The first stop was to enjoy the local commerce. Chaves has a vibrant street trade, where small, cozy shops keep tradition alive. One of the discoveries we liked the most was the bakery on the side of the road. At the door, samples of "royal bread" were displayed so that passers-by could see the variety they had. Real bread, typical of Chaves, is a delicious delicacy, made with simple ingredients, but with an unmistakable flavor. Its crispy crust and fluffy center make it one of the essential elements of local cuisine. We couldn't resist taking some home as a souvenir of our trip.

Our visit also included a stop at the Church of São João de Deus, a small but impressive religious building located in the heart of the city. The church, built in the 17th century, has simple architecture, but a serene beauty that invites contemplation. The Church of São João de Deus is a must-see for anyone who wants to learn a little more about the spiritual history of Chaves, and it is also a place of peace and reflection.

The day ended with an unforgettable moment: a stunning sunset on the banks of the Tâmega River, watched by all of us, including the grandmothers. The sky, tinged with shades of orange and pink, seemed to reflect all the tranquility and beauty of the place. Sitting by the water, we listened to the gentle murmur of the river and breathed in the fresh afternoon air as we shared stories and created new memories. The feeling of being surrounded by family, in such a beautiful environment, made the moment even more special.

Right at the end we were lucky enough, this time, to find the first landmark of the famous National Route 2, which last time escaped us. This landmark, located in the city of Chaves, marks the beginning of one of the most emblematic routes in Portugal, which stretches across the entire country, from north to south, connecting picturesque and diverse locations, on a route that exceeds 700 km. Seeing this landmark renewed the desire to plan a trip to Nacional 2, with everything it has to offer, through unique landscapes, rich culture and traditions that mark each region.

The visit to Chaves, once again, proved to be an enriching experience full of discoveries. Between its rich history, welcoming shops and stunning scenery, the city always offers something new to those who visit. And, above all, it serves to strengthen family ties, create memories that last over time and make us appreciate the simple and beautiful things in life even more. We will definitely come back many more times to continue exploring and experiencing such special moments as this one.
