Cacela Velha - Ria Formosa / Algarve - Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)

As I said, we took advantage of our stay down here to head to the Algarve. But this visit had a purpose.
I spent a few years on vacation in Vila Nova de Cacela and I really wanted my husband and daughter to visit this place.

Como vos disse, aproveitamos a estadia cá por baixo para rumar ao Algarve. Mas esta visita teve um propósito.
Passei alguns anos de férias em Vila Nova de Cacela e queria muito que o meu marido e a minha filha conhecessem este local.

The sun was shining when we arrived in Cacela Velha, a small village that brought back many memories of my childhood. We left Mértola early to make the most of the day and explore this part of the Algarve which, for me, has always had a special charm. As we approached, I could already feel the familiarity in the air, as if time had barely passed.

O sol brilhava quando chegámos a Cacela Velha, uma pequena aldeia que trazia de volta muitas memórias da minha infância. Saímos cedo de Mértola para aproveitar ao máximo o dia e explorar esta parte do Algarve que, para mim, sempre teve um encanto especial. Quando nos aproximarmos, já sentia a familiaridade no ar, como se o tempo quase não tivesse passado.

Cacela Velha continues to be a peaceful jewel by the sea. As soon as we saw the village, I was immediately transported back in time. The little white church, located on top of the cliff, and the little whitewashed houses with colored bars were still there, preserved as if time had not passed them by. The simplicity of the place, with its narrow streets and stone sidewalks, remains intact. It is this same serenity that has always defined Cacela Velha and that now I wanted to share with my family.

Cacela Velha continua a ser uma joia tranquila à beira-mar. Assim que avistámos a aldeia, fui imediatamente transportada para o passado. A pequena igreja branca, situada no topo da falésia, e as casinhas caiadas de branco com barras coloridas ainda ali estavam , preservadas como que se o tempo não tivesse passado por elas . A simplicidade do lugar, com suas ruas estreitas e calçadas de pedra, permanece intacta. É essa mesma serenidade que sempre definiu Cacela Velha e que agora eu queria partilhar com a minha família.

As I walked through the alleys, I told them stories of past summers, of the days when I ran through these streets with my sister and our friends, to see who would get to the beach first. We went to the viewpoint, which offers a spectacular view of the Ria Formosa and the great golden sand that stretches to the horizon. The sea was calm, with that shine that only the Algarve has. I showed my daughter how, when she was little, we used to take advantage of the low tide and play in the warm waters.
We collected clams and fish, stayed in the water until our lips turned purple and took walks for an hour or two.
We walked along the sand to Monte Gordo as we arrived at the beach around 8 am.

Ao caminhar pelas ruelas, contei-lhes histórias de verões passados, dos dias em que eu corria por estas ruas com a minha irmã e as nossas amigas ,para ver que chegava primeiro à praia. Fomos até ao miradouro, que oferece uma vista espetacular sobre a Ria Formosa e o grande areal dourado que se estende até ao horizonte. O mar estava calmo, com aquele brilho que só o Algarve tem. Mostrei à minha filha como, quando era pequena, costumávamos aproveitar a maré baixa e brincar nas águas mornas.
Apanhávamos ameijoas e peixes, ficávamos na agua ate os lábios ficarem roxos e fazíamos caminhadas de uma ou duas horas.
Percorríamos o areal até Monte Gordo pois chegávamos à praia perto das 8 da manhã.

When we got back, the dips and Tia Aurora's Berlin ball were already delicious, fresh enough to eat straight away :-)
The image that is present in my memory is the one in which I see two chairs, an umbrella and two people with straw hats. My uncles opened the beach and when we arrived we had practically an hour of this paradise to ourselves.

No regresso já sabiam bem os mergulhos e a bola de Berlim da Tia Aurora, fresquinha para comer na hora :-)
A imagem que está presente na minha memória é aquela em que vejo duas cadeiras, um guarda sol e duas pessoas com chapéus de palha. Os meus tios abriam a praia e quando chegávamos tínhamos praticamente uma hora deste paraíso só para nós.

This visit was more than a nostalgia trip for me. I brought my father close to me once again because I know how much he loved this place.
It was also an opportunity to share with my family a place that is part of my history, where time seems to move forward in a different way and where simplicity and natural beauty continue to define the rhythm of life. Cacela Velha, has a welcoming silence and stunning landscapes and remains almost unchanged, resisting the passing of the years. Watching them explore and marvel at this place made me feel like a new layer of memories had been created! One that we shared together, and that, I hope, will be kept in our hearts for the future.

Esta visita foi mais do que uma viagem nostálgica para mim. Trouxe o meu pai para perto de mim mais uma vez, pois sei o quanto ele adorava este lugar.
Foi ainda oportunidade de partilhar com a minha família um lugar que faz parte da minha história, onde o tempo parece avançar de maneira diferente e onde a simplicidade e a beleza natural continuam a definir o ritmo de vida. Cacela Velha, tem um silêncio acolhedor e paisagens deslumbrantes e permanece quase inalterada, resistindo à passagem dos anos. Vê-los explorar e ficarem maravilhados com este lugar, fez-me sentir que uma nova camada de memórias foi criada! Uma que partilhamos juntos, e que, espero, ficará guardada nos nossos corações para o futuro.
