Afternoon Walk Through - Valença / Riding Portugal

After a pleasant afternoon spent in Monção, we decided to head to the Valença Fortress. Our little girl, who was already showing great curiosity about the places we were visiting, was excited about the possibility of exploring another part of Portugal's history. The day, despite being cold, was milder, and it was no longer raining, which made all the difference in ensuring that the trip was peaceful and without any major setbacks. We chose to visit Fortaleza in the late afternoon, the perfect time to enjoy the place, as the tourist movement had already decreased and the atmosphere was much calmer.

Depois de uma tarde agradável passada em Monção, decidimos seguir para a Fortaleza de Valença. A nossa pequena, que já demonstrava grande curiosidade pelos lugares que íamos conhecendo, estava entusiasmada com a possibilidade de explorar novamente mais um pedaço da história de Portugal. O dia, apesar de frio, estava mais ameno, e já não chovia, o que fez toda a diferença para que o passeio fosse tranquilo e sem grandes imprevistos. Optamos por visitar a Fortaleza no final da tarde, uma hora perfeita para apreciar o lugar, pois o movimento dos turistas já tinha diminuído, e o ambiente estava muito mais calmo.

The Valença Fortress is one of the most notable landmarks in the region, and its structure leaves no one indifferent as it allows us to walk along its walls, exploring different angles of the city. When we are there, we feel the presence of the past and the historical importance of that space.

A Fortaleza de Valença é um dos marcos mais notáveis da região, e a sua estrutura não deixa ninguém indiferente pois, permite-nos caminhar ao longo das suas muralhas, explorando diferentes ângulos da cidade. Quando estamos ali, sentimos a presença do passado e a importância histórica daquele espaço.

As you walk through the narrow streets inside the fortress, you can see some local shops selling regional products and handicrafts. The atmosphere in the stores is cozy, and the range of products on offer is varied, from typical ceramics to leather goods, as well as the region's famous wines and traditional sweets. Our little girl loved seeing the hand-painted ceramic pieces. We spoke to some of the traders, who told us about the city's artisanal tradition and the care with which they select the products for their stores. This type of local commerce gives the Valença Fortress an even more authentic touch, connecting the present to the past in a unique way.

Ao caminhar pelas ruas estreitas que se encontram dentro da fortaleza, é possível ver algumas lojas de comércio local que vendem produtos regionais e artesanato. O ambiente nas lojas é acolhedor, e a oferta de produtos é variada, desde cerâmica típica até artigos em couro, passando pelos famosos vinhos da região e doces tradicionais. A nossa pequena adorou ver as peças de cerâmica pintadas à mão. Conversámos com alguns dos comerciantes, que nos contaram sobre a tradição artesanal da cidade e sobre o cuidado com que selecionam os produtos para as suas lojas. Este tipo de comércio local dá à Fortaleza de Valença um toque ainda mais autêntico, ligando o presente ao passado de uma forma única.

We decided to take a break for a snack at one of the cafes that can be found here. The cold was already starting to be felt, but the cozy atmosphere of the café made the experience more pleasant. What made this snack even more special was the live music that accompanied our moment. A man played the guitar and sang, and the soft sound of the music filled the space. The music seemed to fit perfectly with the peaceful atmosphere of the fortress, making that late afternoon different.

Decidimos fazer uma pausa para lanchar num dos cafés que aqui se podem encontrar. O frio já se começava a sentir, mas o ambiente acolhedor do café tornou a experiência mais agradável. O que tornou este lanche ainda mais especial foi a música ao vivo que acompanhou o nosso momento. Um senhor tocava guitarra e cantava, e o som suave das músicas preencheu o espaço. A música parecia encaixar perfeitamente com o ambiente tranquilo da fortaleza, tornando aquele fim de tarde diferente.

The end of the afternoon was the best time to explore this place, without the intense movement of tourists, which allowed us to enjoy the snack and local commerce in a more intimate and relaxed way.

O final da tarde foi a melhor altura para explorar este lugar, já sem o movimento intenso de turistas, o que nos permitiu desfrutar do lanche e do comércio local de forma mais íntima e relaxada.

Valença, and Fortaleza, is a place that deserves to be visited and revisited, not only for its historical importance, but also for being welcoming and for the memories that we create on a visit like this. The live music, the shops full of stories and the simple pleasure of being in such a beautiful place made this late afternoon a special moment.
