A Trip Through the Beaches of Melides and Malhão / / Riding Portugal

The day began with soft sunlight streaming through the bedroom window. It was a perfect day to explore some of the most beautiful beaches in southern Portugal. We decided to spend the day between Melides beach and Malhão beach, both located on the magnificent Alentejo coast. We were staying in a small village further north, a cozy place where the morning silence was interrupted only by the songs of storks. We got in the car and started the trip, eager to discover Melides that we had never visited and to revisit Malhão, as the last trip to this beach had been in 2023 in the middle of winter.

O dia iniciou com a luz suave do sol a entrar pela janela do quarto. Era um dia perfeito para explorar algumas das mais belas praias do sul de Portugal. Decidimos passar o dia entre a praia de Melides e a praia do Malhão, ambas situadas na magnífica costa alentejana. Estávamos alojados numa pequena vila mais a norte, um lugar acolhedor onde o silêncio da manhã era interrompido apenas pelo canto das cegonhas. Pegamos no carro e iniciamos a viagem, ansiosos por descobrir Melides que nunca tínhamos visitado e por revisitar o Malhão, pois a ultima ida a esta praia tinha sido em 2023 em pleno inverno.

The route, (almost always) with the beach as company, offered spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. The winding road allows your gaze to get lost in the infinite blue (green) of the sea, which contrasts with the green of the hills and the gold of the wheat fields. There is no smell like Alentejo in summer :-) As we move south, the relief becomes smoother, with the landscape changing to extensive plains full of cork oaks and olive trees. We pass through typical villages, with their little white houses with colored windows, and this gives me a feeling of peace and tranquility that I can't get anywhere else in the country.

O trajeto, (quase sempre) com a praia como companhia, oferecia vistas espetaculares do Oceano Atlântico. A estrada sinuosa permite que o olhar se perca no azul (esverdeado) infinito do mar, que contrasta com o verde das colinas e o dourado dos campos de trigo. Não há cheirinho como o do Alentejo no Verão :-) À medida que avançávamos para sul, o relevo torna-se mais suave, com a paisagem a mudar para extensas planícies repletas de sobreiros e oliveiras. Passamos por vilas típicas, com as suas casas brancas de janelas coloridas, e isso traz-me uma sensação de paz e tranquilidade que não consigo em mais nenhum ponto do país.

We arrived at Melides beach in the morning. As soon as we step onto the fine, golden sand, we are immediately overcome by a feeling of freedom. Melides is an extensive, almost wild beach, where nature dominates the scene. The tranquility was absolute and the sea was calm with the sun shining brightly, reflecting on the surface of the sea, which looked like a mirror of blue and green tones. We walked along the beach, feeling the warm sand on our feet, and I took the opportunity to dive. The smell of the sea and the gentle breeze created a perfect setting.

Chegamos à praia de Melides ainda durante a manhã. Assim que pisamos a areia fina e dourada, somos imediatamente tomados por uma sensação de liberdade. Melides é uma praia extensa, quase selvagem, onde a natureza domina o cenário. A tranquilidade era absoluta e o mar estava calmo com o sol a brilhar intensamente, refletindo-se na superfície do mar, que parecia um espelho de tons azuis e verdes. Caminhamos ao longo da praia, sentindo a areia quente nos pés, e aproveitei para mergulhar. O cheiro a mar e a brisa suave criavam um cenário perfeito.

After a refreshing shower and some time resting, we returned to the car to head towards the second stop of the day: Malhão beach. The road that connects Melides to Malhão is a true journey through the essence of Alentejo. As we approached Vila Nova de Milfontes, the landscape became even more fascinating, with steep cliffs that descend to the sea, small hidden coves and dunes that seem to have been sculpted by the wind.

Depois de um banho refrescante e de algum tempo a descansar, voltamos ao carro para seguir em direção à segunda paragem do dia: a praia do Malhão. A estrada que liga Melides ao Malhão é uma verdadeira jornada pela essência do Alentejo. À medida que nos aproximávamos de Vila Nova de Milfontes, a paisagem tornava-se ainda mais fascinante, com falésias abruptas que descem até ao mar, pequenas enseadas escondidas e dunas que parecem esculpidas pelo vento.

Malhão beach, located a little north of Vila Nova de Milfontes, is another haven of natural beauty. Upon arriving, we came across a beach that was more isolated and wild than Melides. Access is via a dirt road, which already anticipates a place less affected by tourism. The sand is as fine as that of Melides, but here, the dark rocks emerging from the sea give it an imposing appearance. The waves were bigger and more vigorous, crashing hard against the rocks and creating a natural melody.

A praia do Malhão, situada um pouco a norte de Vila Nova de Milfontes, é outro refúgio de beleza natural. Ao chegar, deparamo-nos com uma praia mais isolada e selvagem do que Melides. O acesso é feito por um caminho de terra, o que já antecipa um lugar menos tocado pelo turismo. A areia é tão fina quanto a de Melides, mas aqui, as rochas escuras que emergem do mar conferem-lhe um aspeto imponente. As ondas eram maiores e mais vigorosas, quebrando com força contra as rochas e criando uma melodia natural.

We spent the afternoon exploring the different coves of Malhão, each one more beautiful than the other. There is something deeply relaxing about being in a place where the only sound is that of the sea and the wind. I noticed that, despite its raw beauty, Malhão remained relatively calm, perhaps due to its more difficult access, which only increased the feeling of being in a piece of paradise yet to be discovered.

Passamos a tarde a explorar as diferentes enseadas do Malhão, cada uma mais bonita que a outra. Há algo de profundamente relaxante em estar num lugar onde o único som é o do mar e do vento. Reparei que, apesar da sua beleza bruta, o Malhão permanecia relativamente calmo, talvez devido ao seu acesso mais difícil, o que apenas aumentava a sensação de estar num pedaço de paraíso ainda por descobrir.

When the sun started to go down, we made our way back. The golden light of late afternoon covered the landscape, transforming it into a tableau of warm colors. We returned to our accommodation with a full heart, after a perfect day, in tune with nature. The beaches of Melides and Malhão are, without a doubt, two hidden treasures on the Alentejo coast, and the heat of the day, combined with the beauty of these places, made this visit memorable.

Quando o sol começou a descer , fizemos o caminho de volta. A luz dourada do fim da tarde cobria a paisagem, transformando-a num quadro de cores quentes. Voltamos ao alojamento com o coração cheio, depois de um dia perfeito, em sintonia com a natureza. As praias de Melides e do Malhão são, sem dúvida, dois tesouros escondidos da costa alentejana, e o calor do dia, combinado com a beleza destes locais, tornou memorável esta visita.
