My long weekend in London no. 14 – Greenwich

When at the beginning of education, still in primary school, there is a new subject called Geography, then already during the first lesson, the name Greenwich appears as a place that includes the term from 1884, the prime meridian. I have always wondered from the moment of reflection, I went to such a place and generally it was possible to visit it. Going to London, that the opinion about Greenwich changed, and which took place there Royal Astronomical Observatory, which did not take place as a result of the decision of this district. To receive this authority in the city center, within the range of the network, because the fully automated DLR underground line marked on maps in azure. Plus such a square footage that you can use in the first carriage in front of the window and get out like a tram driver, and besides they have amazing views of what is in front of us. After a few stations, the underground line emerged from the ground and immediately before our eyes came an amazing view of the compact development of skyscrapers around the Isle of Dogs docks. After a short, amazing trip between the skyscrapers, we went underground again to cross the Thames and finally conquer Greenwich. After leaving the tube, we were unpleasantly surprised, because we found that we only had two options to get to the surface. One was the elevator, and the other was the regular first one. There was a queue for the elevators, so we walked up the stairs, and there were quite a few of them to overcome.

Gdy na początku edukacji, jeszcze w szkole podstawowej pojawił się nowy przedmiot o nazwie Geografia, to już podczas pierwszych lekcjach pojawiła się nazwa Greenwich jako miejsca, które zgodnie z ustaleniem z roku 1884 wyznacza południk zerowy. Zawsze od tamtego momentu zastanawiałem się, po co jechać w takie miejsce i co ogólnie można tam zwiedzać. Dopiero wyjazd do Londynu sprawił, że zmieniłem zdanie na temat Greenwich, a znajdujące się tam Królewskie Obserwatorium Astronomiczne wcale nie było największą atrakcją tej dzielnicy.
Aby dostać się do tej dzielnicy musieliśmy w centrum miasta wsiąść w wyjątkową, bo w pełni zautomatyzowaną linie metra DLR oznaczona na mapach kolorem lazurowym. Plus takiego metra jest taki, że można usiąść w pierwszym wagoniku tuz przed szyba i poczuć się jak motorniczy, a poza tym mieć niesamowite widoki na to co jest przed nami. Po kilku stacjach linia metra wyłoniła się spod ziemi i niemal od razu naszym oczom ukazał się niesamowity widok zwartej zabudowy wieżowców wokół doków Isle of Dogs. Po krótkiej, acz niesamowitej wycieczce między wieżowcami ponownie zanurzyliśmy się pod ziemię, po to aby przejechać na drugą stronę Tamizy i finalnie dotrzeć do Greenwich. Po wyjściu z metra czekała nas niemiła niespodzianka, bo okazało się, że aby wyjść na powierzchne mamy tylko dwie możliwości. Jedna to winda, a druga t zwykłe schody. Do windy ustawiła się kolejka, więc poszliśmy pieszo po schodach, a było ich całkiem sporo do pokonania.

After using it, it was incredibly surprising, because the street was closed, unlike all the London streets I had encountered so far. Very clean, lots of cafes, lots of people, most of whom gave the impression that most of them were here for recreation. From the street we went directly to the hill on which the Royal Greenwich Observatory is located, but we didn't reach it. We went a little further west and so ten other people, decided to lie down on the lawn with a wonderful view of the skyscrapers built around the Isle of Dogs docks. This was the first place in the public space of London where I felt completely hidden. Everyone around was having a date with wine and snacks, or picnicking with friends. To this should be added the glowing light and a nice flower. No wonder we made ourselves a spare in this place. Whether the observatory located a few hundred meters next to us decided not to enter, because the first was not taken during its visit, and the payment of 10 results for the possibility of standing astride the eastern and western hemispheres, to definitely overpaid. Instead, we decided to go down the hill and there let into the National Maritime Museum.

Po wyjściu na powierzchnię byliśmy niesamowicie zaskoczeni, bo ulica na którą wyszliśmy wyglądała kompletnie inaczej niż wszystkie dotychczas spotykane Londyńskie ulice. Bardzo czysto, dużo kawiarenek, dużo ludzi z których miałem wrażenie, że większość jest tu w celach rekreacyjnych. Z ulicy ruszyliśmy bezpośrednio na wzgórze na którym znajduje się Królewskie Obserwatorium Astronomiczne w Greenwich, ale nie doszliśmy do niego. Poszliśmy troszeczkę bardziej na zachód i tak jak dziesiątki innych osób postanowiliśmy położyć się na trawniku z cudownym widokiem na wieżowce zbudowane wokół doków Isle of dogs. To było pierwsze miejsce w przestrzeni publicznej Londynu, gdzie czułem się kompletnie bezpiecznie. Wszyscy wokół randkowali z winem i przekąskami, lub piknikowali w gronie znajomych. Do tego należy dodać jeszcze świecące słońce i przyjemny wiaterek. Nic więc dziwnego, że zrobiliśmy sobie w tym miejscu dłuższą przerwę. Do obserwatorium położonego kilkaset metrów obok zdecydowaliśmy się nie wchodzić, bo po pierwsze nie mieliśmy czasu na jego zwiedzenie, a płacenie 10 funtów za możliwość stanięcia okrakiem na wschodniej i zachodniej półkuli to zdecydowanie przepłacona atrakcja. Zamiast tego postanowiliśmy pójść na dół wzgórza i tam wstąpić do Narodowego Muzeum Morskiego.
