Dear friends, today I want to show you a rather interesting building - it used to be a water tower and has an unusual shape. It meets us at the entrance to the town of Kohtla Järve, which is in the north-east of Estonia. The condition of the tower is now rather poor despite the fact that it is considered as a landmark and one of the symbols of the town. Why it is a symbol and why it is now in a wretched state, I will try to explain. |

I will start with the symbol. My father was a miner, that is why the story of this tower was of particular interest to me. If you look closely, you will see that this tower is a resemblance to a mining lantern of an old style. For those who have no idea about them, I am putting some photos of such lamps here which I have found on the Internet. You may compare them yourselves. |

It is said that this shape of the tower was conceived by the architect because Kohtla Järve is a town of miners. It appeared thanks to the rich deposits of oil shale in 1946, almost immediately after the Second World War. As for the name of the architect of the object that is now an emblem of Kohtla Järve, unfortunately, I could not find it on the World Wide Web, which, of course, is strange. I think that it was some ordinary architect or a group of architects at an enterprise, let's say - at one of the mines, and no one was interested in their names those days, therefore, it was not preserved in history, alas. |

Now about the state of the tower. I think that now the Kohtla Jarve authorities would put her in order, but earlier, until the end of the last century, no one cared about it. Shabby and with roughly boarded up windows and doors, it was meeting those entering the town and was not at all pleasing to the eye. It did not surprise anybody that - in 1989 - it was happily handed over to private hands. The new owner began repairing and tidied up the lower part of the tower - a little, but then he also stopped working on the structure. |

A few years ago, a local college iniciated a competition for ideas for the revival of this curious historical site. They wanted to make it not only a decoration for the city, but also a place useful for it. The ideas were even pretty good. For example, one of the prepositiond was to make an observation deck on the tower as well as a cafe, where it would be possible not only drink a cup of coffee, but also see an exhibition telling about the history of the town. Someone suggested setting up an art gallery and an information point there. Other ideas included placing an office for renting bicycles or using the building for advertising ... But nothing of the above said has been made, unfortunately ... |

So, as you can see, the perfectly conceived and well-implemented idea of creating a symbol of the town of miners is not yet pleasing the guests and residents of the town with its appearance. I really hope that the situation will change soon. |

Greetings @olgavita. The Art of the Metaphor. This is pretty much what your post is all about in terms of its architectural significance. In the real world, Architects and Designers are constantly inspired by geometries from man-made as well as natural objects. In fact, they have been imitated a lot due to their effectiveness. Most of the time, it's Mother Nature that has always been a source of creativity for these industries because of her sustainable solutions to our pressing problems. Since the town of Kohtla Järve is a landmark of miners, its iconic tower resembling a mining lantern is the perfect symbolism for such a place. Thank you for presenting this marvelous gem of architecture from Estonia!
Thank you for your kind comment, @storiesoferne! I like that symbol of mining labour but hope that the owner or the town authorities will give proper order to it.
Well done @olgavita! We're happy to inform you that this publication was specially curated and awarded RUNNER-UP in Architecture Brew #44. Congratulations!

Oh, I am very, very grateful!
We're also thankful to you @olgavita. And we're delighted to have you in our beloved community.
We have something in common. My great-grandfather was also a miner and I think it is a very original water tank. It is also reminiscent of a lighthouse. I hope it will be respected and restored. In a town very dear to me, a water tank was demolished a few days ago and I remembered it when I read your post.
The water tower destroyed, Málaga.
Best regards @olgavita.
Thank you for reading my post, @cuvi. It can be painful to see places dear to your hart destroyed, I understand that well. That was nice to hear that we have something in common. 😁 Have a pleasant week!
I love these kinds of structures, especially their old looks which brings me nostalgic memories of the 1990s where I mostly see those kinds of water towers in my hometown (which are still in use today)
This tower is out of use and its existence depends on the owner. There will be nothing good if nature or people destroy it. Thank you for stopping by, @afterglow, have a nice day!
