Resolving Problems by “First Principles” can make the Difference (EN-ES)

When I was finishing my high school my math teacher used to say “Life, as in math, If you don’t remember the formulae to solve problems, then remember the concept and take it from there, DO IT BY FIRST PRINCIPLES”.

Pondering about that, made me think about trigonometrical identities. Probably it was not easy to remember all of them, by remembering the concept, it is easy to develop them by First Principle. Let’s have a look at it:

having an opposite side, a, and an adjacent side, b and c as its hypotenuse, as shown. So, by definition, the trigonometric functions of this angle are:

In every day life, when encountering a problem with no apparent solution, we should think about First Principles.

Once, when I was visiting a friend, his son asked him forsome help with certain homework because he couldn’t do much since there was no internet signal. This friend of mine said: “Do it by First Principle. Go to the book-shelf, look for some books, investigate about the subject and do your homework”

Let me tell you about some other time I witnessed the concept of First Principles applied.

It was a Sunday morning and I had gone to visit family about 5 hrs. away driving. I thought about an early return home; however, the car’s engine didn’t crank. I managed to get the starter motor down, disassembled it. It was then when I realized that one of the brushes had unwelded.

Una vez, cuando estaba visitando a un amigo, su hijo le pidió ayuda con unos deberes porque no lograba hacer mucho sin señal de Internet. Mi amigo le dijo a su hijo: "Hazlo por el Primeros Principios. Ve a la biblioteca, busca algunos libros, investiga sobre el tema y haz los deberes"

Permítanme contarles sobre otra ocasión en la que fui testigo de la aplicación del concepto de los Primeros Principios.

Era un domingo por la mañana y había ido a visitar a la familia a unas 5 horas de distancia conduciendo. Pensé en reggresar temprano a casa; sin embargo, el motor del auto no arrancaba. Conseguí bajar el motor de arranque y lo desarmé. Fue entonces cuando me di cuenta que una de las escobillas o carbones se había despegado.

Being almost in the middle of nowhere, I knew it wasn’t easy to find a soldering iron or a soldering gun to welded it back on again. It was then when I learned a lesson about using the definition and application of soldering by First Principles. All that was needed was something that could be heated so as to get it hot enough and a power supply to get it hot with.

One on my brothers in law had gone around and got back with a friend. This middle age man had brought with him two pieces of long, thick electric wire and the carbon core of a AA battery. This man connected one wire to the negative pole of the car’s battery and the other end of the cable to the brush to be welded. The other wire was connected to the positive pole and the other end to the AA battery’s carbon core. Using this primitive but useful arraignment He managed to get the job done.

Al estar casi en medio de la nada, sabía que no era fácil encontrar un cautin o una pistola de soldar para volver a resoldarlo. Probably there could be a huge number of solutions when facing a problem, however, solving them by First Principles should be considered as a good alternative..
