Family Traditions
Prior to subscribed, while reading what the community was about, I agreed that as time passes by on us, the more we have to share. The key is to let people know where to look for when facing difficulties, so as to place into play the most convenient answer to those difficulties. This interesting and wonderful Silver Bloggers Community is there for precisely that.
We, young hearted people, have such a huge number of brain’s files to be shared that probably we do not know where to start.
Pondering about that, and thinking about the family’s activity we have been carrying out lately these days, the word Traditions came to my mind.
Along with that, also came thoughts about an old film, “Fiddler on The Roof”,located on an ukranian village, where traditions from generations were broken and new family ones initiated, and as a violinist on the roof they could be unbalanced and easy to fall.
So, traditions are either inherited or developed by the family. An inherited tradition in our family in December, at this especial time of the year, is having a reunion as family, on Christmas Eve to have dinner together, sharing traditional meals, that for us Venezuelans, must include hallacas as the main dish, with chicken salad, ham bread and pork as garnish.
Some others traditions may include interchanging Christmas presents or some sort of typical sweets
However, that is not the tradition I would like to talk about. Since my eldest grandson has been old enough, him and I have begun our own tradition as far as making our house looking more welcoming for Christmas is concerned. This allows us to spend time together, to listen to typical music of the Christmas season, “the Venezuelan gaita”, to sing along, to joke, to make it a wholesome recreation time together.
How do we start this tradition time? To do that, we just stand ourselves in front of the house, have a good look around and decide what is needed to accomplish our goal.
To start with, this year we decided to scrap the wall of the front fence on the outside as well as on the inside, to pill off the paint flakes that were about to fall off.
Also, this year my grandson’s cousin from his mother side decided to join us to do it as quickly as we could.
The following step was to brush off all the sand, powder and any flakes left from the scraping, on the walls, on either side of the fence.
Once this was accomplished, our next step was to start painting. When you do it with the same or similar colour, it will probably need just one hand of paint.
And whenever someone is distracted, we have amusing times.
What is nice about a few of us doing it is that while I was finishing the fence, my grandson and his cousin were doing the front porch.
After we finished painting, it was time to arm our Christmas tree and decorated it, which also is part of our family tradition.
The spirit that reigned in our home started to feel different so that we continued decorating the inside of the house.
Once we had finished, we had a look around and felt pleased with the job done. However what really made me feel joyful was what my grandson said about our tradition: “Grandpa” he said, “I feel so happy with our tradition and I cherish it so much that I will pass it on to my sons and grandsons. I will let them know that you and I started it and had great times together”
That is what makes traditions worthy

Welcome to Silver Bloggers @ogutierrez, great that you're teaching your grandson not only valuable life lessons, but also teaching him skills like home maintenance etc and making it a fun project! Long live these traditions!
You're so right about us 'young-at-heart' having much storage in our brain 'files', as long as we don't run out of storage space 😉
Thanks for welcoming me in your community. I believe we should make the most out of it.
I would say that in order to keep that memory healthy, best to do is to keep at work, that way we will be able to continue sharing with the loved ones, apart from keeping the "German Gentleman, Mr Alzheimer", with all due respect, away from us...
LOL, I love that name you give for that dreaded condition! Keeping busy is what keeps us going not so😊
Hi.
Very much so, quite agreed with you. I could say that the more we keep our mind working, the healthier it is going to be. However, not excessively, otherwise we may end up "around the bend".
I appreciate your comment.
Take care.
