Queen Studios - Amazing Sci-Fi Sculptures at Comic-Con San Diego 2022
Finally Back to Comic-Con
It's been a few years since we've been able to go to San Diego Comic-Con, the Worldwide Mecca for Nerds. There was a lot to see this year! Even though it was completely packed, it still felt like there were fewer people than in previous years.
One thing that sucked a bit, but kind of expected was that many of the casts for the big TV shows didn't show up in person, but appeared on giant screens with a live moderator. Probably being for the best since nearly everyone I know who went got Covid. At this point, it just feels like you are almost certain to get it if you join a crowd of large people. Somehow, I managed to stay negative, but we'll see how it goes!
I aways love to have a good look at the amazing busts and sculpts made by Sideshow and Queen Studios. They are absolutely some of the best! They have an uncanny ability to make the work look insanely real. If you stand in front of one of these things and stare them in the face, you start to get the sense that it will eventually lash out at you.
I love the amount of detail they put into the skin texture. The subtleties of the paint work also make all of the difference. I have watched @afturner paint some really bad sculpts and make them look amazing! A lot of people don't appreciate that the paint can be equally important to the sculpt itself; and sometimes moreso!
I have a special affinity with the Egyptian gods. When I was a kid, I didn't really know anything about them, but for some reason I had recurring dreams that I was living in ancient Egypt, and was an alien directing powerful machinery to levitate stones and create the pyramids. In the 90s, I remember watching the Stargate movie for the first time and literally had an anxiety attack because it gave me dejavu from the dreams. How crazy!
The Marvel characters are pretty spot on. I feel like they did a really good job capturing the likeness of the various characters. You would be horrified by some of the hack jobs you see at the Con. Well, I must admit, the standards have come up dramatically over the last couple of Cons. Especially walking around Artist Alley. There used to be all levels of ability back in the day, but now it is getting much tighter. Sometimes you feel like everything is so good that you can kind of become numb to it. This makes bad artwork stand out like a sore thumb!
We had a great time at SDCC this year. It was a bit more relaxed than in previous years as we just didn't feel like stressing about getting into certain panels or getting any particular swag. This 'chilling out' allowed us to actual have a better time. I suppose it is one of the nice things about getting older. Hopefully you learn to calm the hell down and enjoy things you are doing rather than trying to pack every single moment with activity.
I love comic con!
Too bad about the covid.
Usually its fun to go walk around downtown, and bump into interesting stuff, but this year it seemed pretty mellow. The usual advertisement photo shoots didn't seem to be taking place.
Yeah, there was a lot less stuff outside than usual. Did you walk around the back of the convention center? The area where they usually have a huge adult swim area was empty. There was just a tiny little kiosk thing with a window advertising their own convention.
Everyone is trying to do their own convention now and not coming to SDCC anymore.
I usually just stick to Seaport Village and have fun during traffic. I don't live downtown but the whole county used to get flooded with characters. Pre-Covid of course.
My favorite ComiCon memory is Darth Vader taking pictures at the Imperial Beach Pier.
I love Marvel super heroes, but the best sculpture is the first one of a zombie.
Yeah, pretty creepy!
I have never seen amazing pictures like these. Thanks for sharing. I hope I could visit here one day.
Before the Covid pandemic I used to go every year! I hope to get back into the habit. Thanks for stopping by!

Hello Rick: I love your selection for the title image - that is the way I feel sometimes, lol. A amazing freak show, some of them! And I thought riding the U-Bahn (Metro) in Vienna was scary 🤣 - anyway, I reposted this (one of the highlights of my today's visit to the blockchain).
Also added it to my Visionary Art Twitter:

I think I have seen a few people that look like that riding the train... lol! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have more I'll likely post later when I get some time.
Impresionante esculturas, son increíbles muy llamativas y especiales. @nuthman
Impressive sculptures, they are incredible very striking and special
Take care buddy.
Sculptures are interesting and scary as well. Thanks for sharing your Studio visit with us.
amazing detail! Do you know out of which material they are made?
No, not sure! I didn't see it written down anywhere. Some of the materials looks super realistic and organic, though.
I’m blown away by the details on each of the sculptures you showed on your photos. The bust of Strange and Spider look super realistic.
Thanks for giving us a tour of Comic-Con 😊
Thanks! I should probably do a more general post of the con. There was a lot to see!
That would be cool. I have not attended personally but I’ve seen clips of interviews of the Marvel casts and cosplayers.
I think you will have a different perspective as an attendee? 😅
Please more post, the previous ones are quite interesting
I am going to try to be more active. It has been hard lately with my 2 year old son!
Okay thank you!🙏
