A Custom Nuthman Garbage Pail Kid by Topps Artist

Best Gift Ever

So being in the toy and entertainment business can have its perks. It turns out that this was especially true in my case. My other half, @afturner got Smokin' Joe from Topps to make a custom GPK for my birthday. I have to say, I was more than a little bit excited about it.

Me holding a standard sized print of the card

I was just the right age in 1985 to start collecting GPKs. I fondly remember running down to the gas station after school with any quarters that I managed to collect in order to buy as many first and second series packs that I could get my hands on. I amassed a pretty epic collection back in those days. Sadly, a girl in my class stole most of my first series cards out of my desk when I went to the bathroom one day. I still hate her to this day. Hahaha! That may be a bit dramatic, but it does certainly bother me. Especially considering that many of those cards are quite valuable today.

I have managed to collect most of the original series over the years, however. I have a very large collection of Garbage Pail kids, old and new series in storage. Sadly, they are nowhere near the original price of $0.25 that they used to be. I guess that's inflation!

A bunch of unopened recent packs and boxes

So for my birthday, I received 3 large prints that I've been working on trying to frame properly. He made me an A and a B card, "Weird Rick Nuthavic" (because I am a huge Al fan), and Rick Nerdman. The card features a lot of funny details about me that @afturner provided, such as my pet peeve about people who use the word less, when they mean fewer.

First attempt at framing

I attempted to frame one of the prints, but the frame mat is not the right shape. Amanda has a tool to trim them, so we are going to try to make it a bit larger. Especially since you can't see the artist's signature at the bottom.

I must say, this is most certainly the most original gift that anyone has ever given me. Now I am going to be hard pressed to match it on her next birthday. I guess I'll just be wracking my brain until then!

Certificate of Authenticity

I think it is really cool that Topps allows its artists to do these kinds of things without any hassle. A lot of companies, in fact most, would absolutely not allow it. As I have mentioned before on here, the vast majority of the time we can't even mention what companies we work for, let alone make our own works of their licenses.

Not a whole lot more to say about it, other than I am super happy to be part of the 'GPK family'! Now if I could just figure out what to do with all of this stuff. I really need a room that can sort of double as a work space and a display area for all of my collection. I'd likely have to rotate things out since there is so much of it. But that is kind of a cool problem to have!

Wow, that's an amazing gift! The attention to detail, like the matrix background and weird al gimmick. Well done!

That is really awesome! What an amazingly unique and thoughtful gift. I never got into Garbage Pail kids, but I did get into those little MUSCLE wrestler figures. Do you remember those? I had a ton of Micro Machines too. I wish I knew what happened to all of my MUSCLE guys. Good luck for her birthday, you are right, that is going to be a tough one to beat. Might want to start getting her favorite singer on speed dial or something...

Are you talking about these things:

If so, I had a ton of them as well. My mom was always pulling them out of the couch and pretty much everywhere. I never got the little wrestling arena thing where you could put them in to fight, but my friend had it. I had a few micro machines as well, but my brother had a lot more.

Good luck for her birthday, you are right, that is going to be a tough one to beat.

Haha! Yeah, I ended up getting her a really expensive Michaelangelo complete collection book that was recently released. If that doesn't work, I will have to go with getting her favorite singer as you suggested. lol!

Yes, those were them. I didn't have the arena either. That sounds like a wonderful gift for her!

Haha very true. Believe it or not, they are still producing these cards. There are a lot of new ones, but they are not as funny as the old ones imo.

Amanda is an amazing person, this is just a perfect gift.

I'm surprised I missed this post until I decided to visit your wall, it feels good to read from you again.

Stay safe @nuthman

Rick - you manage to post some incredible stuff just when I am not around to see it in time!
As for display space: I would need a mansion to just be able to display my own art, let alone the stuff I got (traded for, mostly) from other artists.
Collections: I gave up on stamps years ago, now I have piles of albums full, some of which were gifted to me over time from people that inherited them. I would have to spend considerable time sorting through what is valuable. I first started in the mid sixties!

I know all about the issues with storing art. We have a whole storage unit (that keep getting more expensive) full of Amanda's canvases. I can't even imagine what it must be like for you with all the years of work!

I have never collected stamps myself, but my father in law has quite the collection over in the UK. He has been collecting since the 60s I believe.

I was a huge fan of these cards when I was in elementary school and that is totally wild that you can have your own made for you. Is "word crimes" a favorite of yours or something?

Haha! You'd think that, but even though I have been a huge Al fan since I was little, the 'less' and 'fewer' thing just always bothered me. It never made me very popular with people, so I generally kept it to myself.

At some point as a kid I noticed that people who use 'less' in the place of 'fewer' virtually don't have the word fewer in their vocabulary. I would get dirty looks when I would point out how silly it would sound to do the opposite, meaning never saying less but only saying fewer. For some reason no one ever makes that mistake. "This rock weighs fewer than a car"
