Cold Brewed Hibiscus Iced Tea [Eng][Spa]
Té frio de Flor de Jamaica
Especias Hermanos Pedroza S.L.
Poligono Industrial Fuente de Piedra. Málaga, Spain.
I'll keep on with the summer vibes of refreshing drinks because even though we are in the final stretch of the summer I still don't miss hot drinks, so for a change I wanted to share what I usually drink instead of popular sodas that I don't like at all.
Although iced coffee is a very pleasant alternative, it would be a bit exaggerated to spend the whole day drinking it, so you have to get alternatives that are just as good and that do not cause alterations in our organism.
This was a habit I adopted after my first trip to the United States, where I was surprised to find natural iced tea without sugar, unless you wanted to, as an option in the menus of many restaurants, I was used to have the option of these drinks but in its industrialized form only, the typical Lipton Ice Tea or Nestea.
When at home we started with this habit, using almost always tea bags, I liked the strong taste of black tea and we also consumed a lot of green tea, but then I found it better to stop drinking these before sunset because the concentration of theine can also affect our sleep rhythm and I have a hard time sleeping.
And then one of my sisters started buying tea leaves from natural stores instead of the typical boxes of tea bags from supermarkets, and she would make huge pots of infused tea that she would let cool and then store in jars in the fridge.
That's how I tasted the intense flavor of Jamaica flower for the first time, and I discovered that it was the only infusion that I liked without adding any kind of sweeteners, because I always need to add something to the other teas so they don't taste like leaf water hahaha then I also found out that it is almost harmless, it doesn't contain theine and it is well known for being diuretic, so I could drink as much as I wanted at any time of the day.
I have no technical knowledge about this plant, I only know that it is very tasty and that it is said to avoid excess if you suffer from low blood pressure, but it is not something I can say for sure, so if someone suffers from this or any other delicate condition better consult before drinking it in large quantities, like me, I have made sure that it does not promote my main ailments: Migraines and insomnia.
While the world pandemic lasted, home deliveries of anything became popular and in that summer, not being able to freely look for some whims, I found a company specialized in commercializing spices that was located in southern Spain and offered the hibiscus flower well below the price that I had seen until then.
In Latin America it was much more common to find it and it was cheap, here the commercial tea bags soften the flavor a lot and they always mix it with red fruits or other flowers that ruin it because it makes the result very sweet and so I like the acidity that it has by itself, besides it is only 4 gr per bag and I would spend many, it is not profitable.
The other option was to buy it in latin stores but because they are imported they are usually a little more expensive, the problem is that I use it in large quantities as I will show below, and these small packages that you get are for someone who makes hot infusions with a couple of flowers and it is enough for him so not for me, they would last me only two batches xD
So the option to buy them online by the kilo was great, over time it has gone up a bit in price, but it's still more than half as cheap as buying it in import stores or grocery stores.
The first time it cost me about 7,00 € the Kilo, the current price is 11,00 € but it lasts me all year, when I use it most is now in summer to prepare it as a refreshing drink but in winter I also make hot infusions.
Online Store : Especias pedroza

So since I discovered the online store of the Hermanos Pedroza I have become a loyal buyer, plus the quality of the flowers can not be better, the flavor is perfect and they are very well preserved. They send you two bags like the one in the pictures, each one of half a kilo. The photo of the label is from the first time I ordered them.
Once you have the ingredients all you need is a jar and a strainer, nothing else. I have this pitcher of almost two liters that came with two filters, one with big holes for making fruit or cucumber water as many like it, I have never used it and the other one for teas and coffee, here sometimes I have made cold brew coffee but I don't like to have it in such large quantities.
On the other hand, I use Jamaica water a lot and the whole pitcher usually lasts me only a couple of days, because it is the drink with which I usually accompany meals, or if I feel like eating something that I do not know what it is, cravings, drinking it takes them away. That's why I make it in large quantities.
The other thing that came with the pitcher is a container to make ice, once your drink is ready if you are going to have it out of the fridge for a while and you want to keep it fresh you can put the ice in the tubular container.
To start you only have to choose the desired filter and screw it in the pitcher, if you do not have a filter you can put the flowers directly in the pitcher and drain them at the moment of serving.
I use about 20 grams of dried flowers in total, that's for about 1.8 lt. I use that amount because that is the amount that fits in the infuser filter, but even with half that you could get a good drink if you like a mild flavor, but I like it well concentrated.
As always the quality of the water is important but in terms of taste I do not feel a big difference in the result using tap water, that because here you can drink it perfectly, it will depend on the place.
The Hibiscus flower begins to mix with the water from the first contact and to dye it red, little by little you can perceive the change.
This way of making hibiscus water takes time as it is a cold extraction, but it maintains much more of the flavor characteristics, accentuating its particular taste.
An additional thing I like to do is to cover the openings with plastic wrap, because the water absorbs a lot of odors and in the refrigerators sometimes there can be some foods that influence the result with their aroma. It is just a precaution.
The preparation is left in the refrigerator until at least 8-12 hours, I usually leave it even more so that it concentrates as much as possible, normally 20 hours. Once the desired time is fulfilled, the flowers are discarded and the drink can be kept in the fridge for several days, I have kept it for almost a week and there has been no problem.
Some people add other elements during the preparation to create different nuances in the drink, a cinnamon stick or a few slices of lemon for example, thus obtaining different flavors, creating your own soft drink.
This is one of the most refreshing drinks I have ever tasted and it does not need any type of sweetener to taste good. The preparation is very simple and there is no need to accelerate the process with heat.
I don't know if there is anyone who likes to enjoy this preparation as much as I do, really very few people prepare iced tea at home, it is something that I can't understand because it is very simple.
Also with the heat of this season, at least on this side of the globe, it is a perfect companion for snacks and meals, so I say goodbye enjoying my Jamaican Water with a delicious fruit tart that goes very well with it.
Ps. I leave a short video of the company that sells the hibiscus flowers I buy, these come from Egypt and are distributed in Spain from the city of Malaga.
See you next time!

Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Especially when you're burning at 42 C and someone says, how can you drink so much water by yourself? Haha sometimes I don't know if people have the concept of "hydration" straight, but these drinks are good alternatives.
Debe ser un té muy delicioso ☺️
@alina97:"It must be a very delicious tea"
It is, I don't know if you have tried it as almost everyone in hot water and it is still very tasty, what happens is that doing it with cold water decreases a little acidity that some people do not like, although it does not lose that point that differentiates it.
@sacra97 : A great presentation in the elaboration of your posts. Hard work but they are simple and beautiful. Much success and a big hug.
Yes you are so right, at least in the photography aspect I take my time trying to get the result as correct as possible, and it's very nice that someone appreciates it like you do, it's exciting. And then with the writing I always end up telling myself to stop because sometimes I think I talk too much. A hug back :D
Hi friend
Love your recipe, and preparing with a comun flower of jamaica here in my city
I like a cold of this tea
Hi @wendyth16
Hey how nice that it is typical where you are, I would be very happy having those plants nearby, those are very beautiful plants indeed.
And when the flowers are dry, I like them even more because they give off a very strong and pleasant smell, I love when I'm going to prepare it that aroma comes out of the container.
Well, you could try to prepare it and tell me how it goes hehehehe
Hi friend, I love how you take the pictures, they look great, I'm not a fan of tea, but I don't refuse to drink it to cool off when it's too hot, no doubt this drink is on my list of things to try, although the option of iced coffee sounds tempting to me always XD, excellent publication.
hahaha dear @eollarvesm , what a pleasure to see you here!
You are right Ice coffee is the clear winner of all these refreshing drinks, but it never hurts to vary a little.
I understand that you don't like tea very much but have you tried this one in particular? it's very different from most so it's possible that it generates a different sensation.
Thank you very much for appreciating the pictures, I make them with love, I really appreciate it.

Well, I had no idea about those health benefits, thanks for sharing it, one more thing to keep drinking it.
Yes the pitcher makes it much easier, but even without it you can do it by placing the flowers inside a bottle of water for example, and leaving them hydrated at least 12h, as the nozzle will be small sure they will not come out of the bottle when you serve it. There is not much mystery.
Pff well the photos is not so much about the camera, I use my phone camera, in fact one of my goals is to study photography and buy a real camera, but well it is not very economical hahaha little by little.

Hello @ninaeatshere
The Hibiscus tea is a lovely tea indeed, with lots of nutritional claims to it. I like to drink it because it's so refreshing and I do not take sugar and avoid commercialized teas (for the same reason you've mentioned).
Thanks for sharing this special procedure with us:)))
That's how a smart customer @millycf1976 🤣
I think I am the one who has to thank you guys for allowing us to have a space where We can talk about this, everyday things that influence our mood and health, and I think that being able to write about it allows us to be aware of and try to be more careful with the way we take care of ourselves.
Thanks a lot!!
It's a pleasure to have you in the community:)
Hi @ninaeatshere, in my mother's house we used to sow this wonderful plant and then let the flower dry and prepare tea, thanks for sharing.
What a wonderful experience to be able to grow your own plant, take care of it and benefit from its fruits, I have heard that everything is tastier because the plants feel the good vibes. I have to settle for buying them, first I am very bad at gardening and even if I wanted to I don't have the space to do it, in the cities one lives in a tight space, the other thing is that I am almost sure that the environmental conditions would not be the best to grow this plant, if not, it would not be so difficult to get.
My wife likes making her own iced teas at home as well. I'll have to lass along this recipe to her.
Oh how nice! If she hasn't tried this one yet she will surely love it! And if she doesn't like it that would be hilarious, so far only one of my sisters hates the taste of it, but that's because she doesn't really like too healthy flavors hahaha but she's the only exception I know of so far.

In my house in Cumaná I used to prepare this delicious tea and I always had it in the fridge to refresh myself, after coming from the street and protect myself from the oriental sun that warms my head. My sister-in-law used to send me hibiscus flowers from her backyard in Monagas. I love Jamaica tea, now here I drink it very hot to relieve the cold that burns to the bone. I want a little jar like yours, I am going to look for it here to buy one and have it for the days when the sun deigns to come out and warm up this city a little. A hug, Nina. Best regards.
