Knitting a vintage collar fueled by sunshine - wip challenge

pinterest steemit titelbild(54).jpg

Dear Needleworkers, envision this scene with your inner eye: its hot, the sun is blazing down on golden wheat fields. A soft warm wind is blowing over the landscape and birds are chirping joyfully. A small path is meandering besides a dark forest which lends a stark contrast to the wide and open fields. Amidst this peaceful setting a woman in a short black dress is dancing happily alongside her loving partner… and then… the sudden awakening. It’s Sunday and there are only 15 hours left to complete a wip, to complete anything to not loose every credibility in the @needleworkmonday community.

Yep, that’s me :-DDD

The downside of last week was I had even worse headaches and another deadline for work. The upside I had no headaches on the weekend, my husband had also a bit of spare time and the weather was fantastic. Accordingly, we decided on Sunday morning to go for a walk through the fields. Honestly, I was so happy to have this free time without feeling completely ill. So happy that I completely forgot that I should have tackled a wip for the next day.

The only thing I had done besides lying in bed or working was knitting sporadically on my lilac cardigan (just as an update: I started on the second sleeve and still do not know if the yarn will be enough). This revelation hit me hard but supported by the lovely weather and my in general good mood I decided to try me on one of my level 2 wips in the evening: the striped sweater which is missing a collar.
20220131_105351694_iOS.jpgRemember? I made a huge mistake in the neckline

Some months ago, I started to knit a sweater with a combination of scrap yarn. I wanted to use up the tiny (or bigger) rests of lovely yarn which I had used for older projects and came up with a boxy sweater in hues of black, pink, lavender and blue. The pattern I used is a variation of my ruffle cardigan. I only wanted to change the neckline and transform it into a vintagey collar. Did not work. My reaction: „go sweater, go into the deepest corner of my wardrobe to never again remind me of my failure“ - and there it went.

And this sweater I pulled out again. Instead of again trying to use a vintage pattern I went to a magazine I had bought exactly for this purpose, because it contained three designs with different kind of collars. I went for the first one in the magazine, a pointy collar in garter stitch. The measurements and stitch count are completely different to my sweater, but I used the explanation and modified it for my own pattern.

At first, I identified the middle of my neckline and put a stitch marker into it, then I picked up 91 stitches around the neckline, carefully observing to distribute them regularly. After knitting nine rows straight I started to increase: on the left and right site of the collar I placed a stitch marker after the sixth stitch and this stitch was doubled every row over the next eleven rows. At this point I tried the sweater on to decide how big I wanted the collar (big!!!!!). After another 10 rows (but without increases) I casted of, happy owner of a finished wip. Or wait… is it finished?!? Sigh, its not. Because of the stripes this sweater has a ginormous amount of yarn ends which need to be sewn in.

„So, dear sweater, what do you think of going back into the dark corner of my wardrobe?“

Back to being seriously, the collar construction was so easy to do, if I had known this before, I guess all my sweaters would have collars. Hopefully I will find some motivation (I guess I should read again on BJ Foggs behaviour model) to sew the yarn ends in…if not… I have another sweater which needs a collar :-DDD

Hi, I haven't seen a shirt with a shirt collar yet. And this one looked great. On the other hand, your drawings have a style I haven't seen before, it highlights an optical illusion. great job! and I'm glad you finished this project.

Its my first knitted collar too 😃 And I am glad you like it. I still have another striped sweater which is awaiting a collar, but I guess I will make it a bit differently, more rounded….
The sketch is made on my IPad (my precious!!!! And I say this although I am not the biggest Lord of the ring fan :-D but I do everything on the table, painting, writing, paying bills… everything)

You are ssooo beautiful in these photos, dearest @neumannsalva !!
It is a brilliant and very accomplished achievement, finishing this garment so beautifully! I know what it is like to want very much to abandon ship mid-project when something doesn't go exactly as planned; it is an amazing feeling to get beyond that point though... I'm feeling good for pushing forward fairly methodically with my doll project, too :-D

Blessings and LOVE,
Clare.

Uhhh blushing over your lovely comment (but beware, my skill in making "nice" photos is high, so if we ever meet in person, don't be disillusioned)
and a big yes to the "its too complicated to spark joy" stage. I have this fairly often :-DDDD Now I somehow need to sew in these million yarnends. I already ponder how I can bribe myself to do it 🤔
But understanding how a collar is knitted it a real plus, I am glad I tried it finally.
And I am sure your doll project will evolve… often the beginning is the hardest, and you are already come far with the body 🥰
Sending hugs!

It was fabulous to get your message here, as ever @neumannsalva - I treasure your words, as I feel a biiiiiiig shift in life and work now - tons of alchemy and a sense of changing season of life - it is jsut perfect having connection via our work and art. I was sharing your Wordpress blog with a beautiful artist friend yesterday - your doll project - her website is here. She loved it - I was sharing your blog post on your controversial art installation. I was showing her my doll project, then mentioned yours, then she shared her sewing-seaweed project... Then a friend sent me this clip about a documentary where this man spends 7 yrs making a fabric from nettles and a dress from this fabric. .... Aaahhh, such blessings of interweaving!

I read you comments some days ago, but these ugly headaches are not helpful in writing, so sorry I only answer now. Your friends website is beautiful and I love her paintings (she has all the qualities I love, but cannot make myself, the light and airiness, a open and hopeful quality) and sewing with seaweed- wow!!!! I followed her on Instagram (are you there too?)
And with the nettle dress: I instantly thought of the fairy of the wild swans from Anderson which is so wonderful and sad at the same time.
And yes sometimes there is a row of „coincidences“ which transform into a bigger pattern, I think we are primed in such moments to be more aware of certain topics/emotions etc. and so are able to see the connections. Looking forward to se you progress and change <3

It looks so good!!! I love how you finished the neckline, awesome idea!! And congratulation for the for managing in the end even though the postponing (i feel you...!!! dont know what I have ever finished without doing it in the last minute before the deadline) also the magazines, would love to look through them, they seem awesome! In fact I love to look at those old sewing or knitting magazines in flea markets or second hand shops, also just for the fun of the photos and images:))

oh yes, the last minute syndrome :-DDDD Sometimes I think I need the raised pressure to get things done and so I unconsciously wait till I have no real time left (ok, sometimes I do not want this but the stitch headachse are stealing my time)
Sadly here are seldom old magazines with crafts on fleamarkets… to be honest flea markets in my region are more like a mix of garbage from private cellars which is not usable at all and new cables and electronic devices. last year I was on a flea market in Leipzig and this was soooo different, with old furniture or clothes etc.

aah yess for sure I noticed huge differences between flea markets in different regions, some are indeed very boring... to be honest I almost just accept the last minute syndrome as my natural workflow at that stage😂

I don't know how to describe that feeling you get when you finish something that has been put off for a long time and realize that it was absolutely easy to do. So you think, Hell, why did I waste so much time not finishing this? LOL. Maybe in German there is a specific word for that :-p

Im glad that you had a good weekend with your husband and without pain, the weather looked special for you to take advantage of it. You also met this week's WIP, everything went well for you ❤️.

Absolutely. I know what you mean... a kind of disbelief in oneself that it was so easy. Sadly more often than having something being really easy in the end, my projects tend to "I should have unravelled it long time ago" :-DDDD
I hope you also had a lovely week in the mountains. I saw some of your photos with the makeup 😍 You look so cool with it, but on the other hand I feel you, I mostly also am not so heavy on the makeup.. too much work :-D Perhaps we need a persona assistant :-DDDDD

Thank youuu. It is not hard to make (only the yarn ends sewing is annoying) Do you knit?

At some point, I tried it, then I left it, I would like to go back on that path, but I have doubts.
