Vassily Ivanchuk es un gran maestro ucraniano y uno de los mejores jugadores del mundo en la actualidad. Llegó a ocupar el segundo puesto del ránking mundial hasta en tres ocasiones diferentes (1991, 1992 y 2007) y fue finalista en el Campeonato del Mundo de la FIDE en 2002. Ha ganado un buen número de torneos internacionales a lo largo de su carrera. Ha sido capaz de derrotar a todos las campeones mundiales después de Bobby Fisher, es decir, desde Anatoly Karpov hasta el actual campeón Magnus Carlsen, posee uno de los estilos de juego más creativos e impredecibles de la historia más reciente del ajedrez,en 1991 siendo segundo en el Ranking mundial derrotó nada más y nada menos que a Gari Kaspárov en una partida donde le dió la vuelta a la Defensa Siciliana en la cual Kaspárov era un dios.
