Back at it // De vuelta

Hand, head and eye injuries forced me into a 3 year period of boring menial jobs. When one is unhappy with his career, he will change jobs on a whim. 6 jobs later here I am, back where I belong! It isn’t the same field, but it is the same industry and that is what matters. I build things.

Las lesiones en las manos, la cabeza y los ojos me obligaron a realizar un período de tres años de aburridos trabajos de baja categoría. Cuando uno no está contento con su carrera, cambia de trabajo por capricho. 6 trabajos después, aquí estoy, ¡de vuelta al lugar al que pertenezco! No es el mismo campo, pero es la misma industria y eso es lo que importa. Construyo cosas.

The break was completely necessary for my health. In that time I nearly severed a finger, was fired and rehired within a day, quit countless jobs, moved across the country and back in a month, lived in a camper, and decided in the end to look for an apprenticeship.

El descanso fue completamente necesaria para mi salud. En ese tiempo estuve a punto de cortarme un dedo, me despidieron y me volvieron a contratar en un día, dejé innumerables trabajos, me mudé al otro lado del país y volví en un mes, viví en una caravana y al final decidí buscar un aprendizaje.

The break wasn’t without its’ benefits.

El descanso no estuvo exento de beneficios.

I’ve almost always worked Independence Day. This year was different. Sometimes you can tell when things are about to look up, even if it’s only because things get worse before they get better.

Casi siempre he trabajado en el Día de la Independencia. Este año fue diferente. A veces se puede saber cuándo las cosas están a punto de mejorar, aunque sólo sea porque las cosas empeoran antes de mejorar.

The sign things are getting better is usually when your employer fronts a hotel and mileage for you.

La señal de que las cosas están mejorando suele ser cuando tu empleador te paga el hotel y el kilometraje.

I’ve been reminded over and over again how hard it can be to leave a comfortable bed to head out into a humid workplace but the view from above makes it worth it.

Me han recordado una y otra vez lo duro que puede ser dejar una cama cómoda para salir a un lugar de trabajo húmedo, pero la vista desde arriba hace que merezca la pena.

What goes up must come down, then go back up. Then come down again…

Lo que sube debe bajar, y luego volver a subir. Y luego volver a bajar...

These went up and they’re new, so they’ll stay up.

Estas subieron y son nuevas, así que se quedarán arriba.

These came down…twice.

Estos bajaron... 2 veces.

Believe it or not this is the easy work.

Lo creas o no este es el trabajo fácil.

Sometimes you have to stick your head where it shouldn't go to see what you are doing. This is one of those times.

A veces hay que meter la cabeza donde no se debe para ver lo que se hace. Esta es una de esas veces.

This is why it’s nice to work outside.

Esto es por lo que es agradable trabajar fuera.

I'm not saying I love my job all the time. When I have to travel the miles are hard and after my shift I return to an empty hotel room. I miss my girlfriend and daughters and hot meals at the end of the day. That being said, the job is rewarding. I live a step above my neighbors and the time apart makes the time together a lot more enjoyable. This is why I'm a Union member. My loved ones will always come first.

No digo que ame mi trabajo todo el tiempo. Cuando tengo que viajar los kilómetros son duros y después de mi turno vuelvo a una habitación de hotel vacía. Echo de menos a mi novia y a mis hijas y las comidas calientes al final del día. El trabajo es gratificante. Vivo un paso por encima de mis vecinos y el tiempo de separación hace que el tiempo que pasamos juntos sea mucho más agradable. Por eso estoy afiliado al sindicato. Mis queridos siempre serán lo primero.
