This is my post for #freewriters Sunday prompt 8 to 10 years hosted by @mariannewest
This is a tragic story that happened recently to my family. My brother woke to the sound of a gunshot in his house. His daughter and her two adult children live with him. They all are on some sort of drugs, I know the daughter's daughter is on Meth, I am not sure if this is the drug that the other two are on.
My brother's daughter and her son had gotten into an argument and he had pushed her to the floor and was on top of her, hands around her neck, he was choking her. His sister could not get him off of their mother so she got her gun and shot him. Why she shot him in the back is something that I will never figure out, why didn't she shoot him in the leg? Or better yet, not shoot him at all, hit him with a cast-iron skillet.
The bullet went between his lungs and into his liver also through his spleen. The cops did not arrest the daughter that night because of the circumstances. At the hospital, they interviewed his mom and she told them that they were only arguing and he was not choking her. In my opinion, she lied because of his condition.
The cops ran the gun and it was stolen, and since his mother lied, they came back and arrested the daughter. Her life is over, if she is lucky she might get out in 8 to 10 years but what I have heard is that she will get 10 to 20 years. They have charged her with attempted murder. She has a young son and now he will never know his mom. They are both in their 30's and because of drugs, their lives have forever changed.
This has affected the entire family, all of our hearts are broken.
I was torn on whether or not to write about this but decided that maybe someone will read it and think about things before acting on them
Guns should only be used when there is an imminent lethal threat. This is one of the reasons I have sided with Kyle Rittenhouse's self-defense claim from the start. He was retreating from the crowd first, and did not fire until he has attacked.
There is no such thing as "shooting to wound," even though many people can and do survive various bullet wounds. Shooting the leg is pure Hollywood nonsense. There are a lot of veins and arteries in the leg which can result in very quickly bleeding to death, and the trauma of a bullet wound just to the muscle tissue is severe.
All that said, while I oppose drug prohibition due to the inherent violations of life, liberty and property it creates, I don't favor drug use or abuse. Especially meth, a drug which only became a problem in the first place due to prohibition.
I was not thinking of the possibility of hitting an artery, I was thinking of not hitting a vital organ, so I do agree with your point. I like the cast-iron skillet idea but when I think of it, if hit in the head, this too can cause death. The problem I have with drugs is what they do to a persons mind, some people can handle them without problems but someone like my daughter, Meth changed her she hallucinates, she used to be the happiest person and everyone loved to be around her, now she is paranoid and unhappy, she thinks people are in walls spying on her, just all sorts of things like that.
So pathetic. May God have mercy on her and this is just the reason why all should try and eschew drugs. It does no good but harm. I pray he survives the shots and the lady gets a light sentence too.
thank you, He is doing better
To God be the glory
I am so sorry ... but this will be on the blockchain forever and may save many lives ... thank you for sharing
This is what came to my mind when I saw the prompt, I struggled with writing about it. Then I thought maybe it will make someone stop and think about what they are about to do. If it saves one life, I did the right thing. Also, you are welcome, and thank you.
This is tragic @myjob. Terrible things can happen in the blink of an eye. I hope he recovers and they get rid of the drug habit. Maybe the mother will tell the truth and the girl get a lighter sentence.
Thank you, All we can do is pray for all of them
