La jornada 10 de las eliminatorias a la Copa del Mundo 2026 me dejaron muy en claro que la selección venezolana de fútbol tiene muchas dificultades para afrontar partidos decisivos e importantes. Esto que acabo de comentar no es nada nuevo ni nada de lo cual debamos sorprendernos ya que ha sido así desde siempre, sin embargo, ante el salto de calidad de muchos futbolistas y de la selección en sí, se nos hace inevitable pensar que en algún momento superaremos la etapa en la que somos un equipo que da sorpresas ocasionales a uno que es capaz de cerrar de la manera más digna los desafíos que afronta sin importar la instancia en la que se encuentre.
Tuve que dejar pasar algunos días para poder pensar con más claridad y escribir algo al respecto, en caliente las emociones nos pueden jugar en contra y en ese sentido podemos perder la sensatez. Entonces, entendí que era absurdo sorprenderse con el mal momento que vive la selección ya que en realidad ese es nuestro nivel (hablando en líneas generales). Quizá por temas de nacionalismo y pasión nos hacemos la idea de que podemos competir a buen nivel, en la actualidad tenemos muy buenos jugadores que nos hacen ilusionarnos, pero me temo que ese talento individual que muestran muchos no está siendo trasladado ni aprovechado en la Selección Nacional y eso es lamentable porque sabemos que tenemos el material para competir.

Maybe because of nationalism and passion we get the idea that we can compete at a good level, we currently have very good players that make us hope, but I am afraid that the individual talent shown by many is not being transferred or taken advantage of in the National Team and that is regrettable because we know that we have the material to compete.
Voy a ser muy sincero, la verdad no me emociona obtener la clasificación al mundial a través de un repechaje o en el 6to lugar y esto muy a pesar de que nunca hemos clasificado a un mundial en nuestra historia, sé que ahora mismo es nuestro máximo sueño, pero lograrlo de esa manera me hace pensar que no tendríamos nada que buscar en una hipotética Copa del Mundo. En Sudamérica compiten 10 selecciones de las cuales siempre han clasificado 4 o 5 en el mejor de los casos y francamente creo que eso es lo correcto, deben ir únicamente los mejores porque no solo representan a un país, sino también a una confederación, así que el nivel de dichas selecciones debe ser alto, y bueno, no creo que un sexto o séptimo lugar en CONMEBOL sea sinónimo de “buen nivel”.
Pero así están las cosas y debemos reconocer que estamos varios escalones debajo de selecciones como Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador (ni hablar de Argentina y Brasil). Con el resto aún se puede competir, pero el problema está en que cuando debemos afrontar los partidos importantes y directos, ya sean de visitantes o de locales, nos cuesta dar ese paso firme que nos de cierta tranquilidad en la tabla. Ya sabemos que no podemos ni siquiera soñar con luchar por los primeros 5 puestos, pero ¿de verdad vamos a sufrir por un sexto o séptimo lugar?, pues, parece que así será en el mejor de los casos.

Sé que en cuanto a historia se refiere somos quienes tenemos menos experiencia en Sudamérica y eso sin dudas afecta, pero desde hace tiempo que cambiamos mucho nuestro fútbol y eso lo hemos demostrado en la cancha, de hecho, los demás países reconocen nuestro crecimiento, pero a pesar de eso, parece que por lo menos en el corto plazo seguirán los problemas para ganar los partidos importantes. Algo tiene que pasar para que todo en torno a la selección cambie, pero me temo que se nos está acabando el tiempo.
