Eric, a historical and uncomfortable drama

Drama is a genre that I rarely watch, it's not really my main interest when I'm looking for new material or content, but that's not why I underestimate it, it's just that I find it difficult to connect with dramas that are very intense and at a certain point can be overwhelming and even uncomfortable. I've seen a few, but right now no title comes to mind that I can mention to you. The thing is, under the influence of my wife, I decided to watch "Eric" a series that you can watch right now on Netflix.

The genre of this 2024 series is drama and thriller, it is directed by Abi Morgan and Lucy Forbes who are unknown to me. It stars none other than Benedict Cumberbatch who plays the role of Vincent, father of Edgar (Ivan Morris), we also see Gaby Hoffmann in the scene. The series is set in what seems to be the New York of the 80's or early 90's (maybe I'm wrong, but the impression I get), by then it is a dangerous place even though we may think otherwise, well, now it is even more so, but that's not the point.

The story revolves around Edgar, son of a man who works in TV with puppets and who seems to be quite creative and intelligent, however, from the first moment we see him on stage he gives the impression that he is not quite right in other aspects, he is moody, proud, manipulative and self-centered, one of those who believe they are right in everything, the truth is a rather complicated character. On the other hand, Edgar is reserved, quiet and curious, he loves what his father does and at a certain point seems to have admiration for him.

His mother, Cassie, always waits at home like a traditional housewife, and well, so far nothing seems to be strange, but the truth is that there is a lot of volatility and dysfunctionality in Edgar's parents, they usually argue and fight during the night and as you well know, these are things that can greatly affect children who often process these terrible emotions in silence. One morning, Edgar is about to go to school as he normally does, Cassie asks Vincent to go with him, but he's caught up in an argument and decides not to, since the school is not that far away.

Even though there may be safe places, we know how dangerous it can be to send our children to school alone, I think it is easy to imagine that one day they may disappear without a trace and without any explanation, but at some point they have to manage on their own and there will be no other option but to take the risk. The truth is that as you can imagine, Edgar is reported missing and this is where the real drama begins.

Believe me, so far I have mentioned very little about the series, in fact, maybe only 10% of what we see there, the rest I will leave to you to discover what this good drama has to offer. Now, who is that blue monster, what does he have to do in this story, well, I think by now you can guess that it's Eric. You should know that this character was created by Edgar, and although his efforts to show the idea to his father were not entirely successful as he did not pay much attention to it, it was the key to the outcome of this story, it was finally Eric who generated the link in the investigation of his father.

Eric | Official Trailer | Netflix

I say this is a historical drama because it is inspired by real events, not this particular story, but the context. New York was a place where children went missing with some frequency and as you can imagine they ended up not showing up or were found dead. It was or is a real problem in which the authorities have shown some incompetence and of course there has been a lot of corruption around it, there are those who are willing to get their hands dirty for a couple of dollars, for whims or for a bit of power.

In this series there is a lot of drama, and believe me, it can be quite uncomfortable and outrageous, there are limits that people do not seem to know and in that sense they are capable of doing atrocious and incoherent things. The truth is that I liked it, it kept me in expectation until the end and I think it was worth watching it in one day. There are 6 intense chapters full of emotions. My score for this series is 6.5/10, it seems a low score, but for a drama it's pretty good.

This is Omar speaking and it was a pleasure for me to share with you this review, I hope it was to everyone's liking, see you soon!

It's a very good miniseries although the other plot of the detective and the search for missing children and the corruption of the city, I think it overshadows the main story, which is kept slack when cumberbatch appears on the scene making the character annoying to watch, I think that shows his great work for that character is unbearable.

I didn't expect or was motivated to see this miniseries either, but just to be a story of a few episodes, I thought it was great.

What you say is true, maybe 6 episodes are few to explore different aspects of the plot and characters. The Cumberbach character is quiet difficult to digest but I think he did a good job. Greetings.

I didn't know about it before, now the way you tell it, the story is not good, but still I will try to watch it. We get to learn a lot from plays every time.

How are you dear friend @musicandreview good morning
I'm also like you, it's hard for me to get hooked on drama series or movies, but this was a different experience.
The father's character is incredible, he really made me hate him.
Thank you very much for sharing this review

Greetings friend, I didn't know about the existence of this series and its plot is quite interesting and without a doubt the disappearance of a child is something extremely delicate and what a bad thing what will happen to him, I'm sure it will be a captivating miniseries and now that blue doll there, I'm very curious, I'll look for it to see it this weekend.

I'm the same way, drama and romance are genres that I rarely watch, but if you recommend it with that 6.5 rating, it's worth giving it a chance.

Oh yep, Eric seems intense but intriguing 👀. Even though drama isn't my go-to, I might give it a try. Appreciate your detailed thoughts and honesty 🙌💛
