My little Pumpkin Garden
Greetings great and wonderful people of this community @hivegarden .
I'm so happy posting in this community for the first time.
I'm a agriculturist and I would love to post my farm experiences here.
I have a little Pumpkin Garden at home.
I want to talk about this garden of mine.
The scientific name of pumpkin is Telfairia occidentalis
Telfairia occidentalis is a tropical vine grown in West Africa as a leaf vegetable and for its edible seeds. Common names for the plant include fluted gourd, fluted pumpkin, ugu (in the Igbo language), and ikong-ubong (in the Efik and Ibibio languages). T. occidentalis is a member of the family Cucurbitaceae and is indigenous to southern Nigeria.[1] The fluted gourd grows in many nations of West Africa, but is mainly cultivated in southeastern Nigeria and it is used primarily in soups and herbal medicines.[2] Although the fruit is inedible[citation needed], the seeds produced by the gourd are high in protein and fat, and can, therefore, contribute to a well-balanced diet.
It is used by the Ibibio's, Efik's and some Eastern parts in Nigeria.
It is nutritious and it is also used to cook soup, porridges, vegetable rice and sauce.
It can can be used for medicinal purpose like boosting the blood and curing of internal heat in the body.
- How to plant it
Its early planting season is from January to April and late planting season is August to October.
First of all, you dig a hole in a fertile ground especially where there is enough humus.
Plant the pumpkin seed in the hole you digged.
It starts germinating on the fourth or fifth day.
It needs enough water to make it grow.
I love planting it because it is nutritious and add nutritional value to the body.
Thanks for reading.
