Nine dead as protests rock Senegal after Sonko jail sentence
In Dakar and the southern town of Ziguinchor, according to the report given by the interior minister,Antoine Diome, the chaos that arose from protesting has led to the deaths of nine in the city's capital. The chaos that came through the protest was between the protesters and the police force as they engaged in stressful activities following the protest.
The protesters gave feedback by taking their protest off the mark as Ousmane Sonko, who is the opposition leader, was sentenced to two years imprisonment. This verdict that led to this clash came through on Thursday after he (the now imprisoned) was disqualified from the political coherency of contesting for the presidential election.
Ousmane Sonko, who has been the mayor in Dakar and the southern town of Ziguinchor, was the epicenter of this chaos, as it was reported that cars and houses were set ablaze following other disturbances, which spurred up the discomfort of many, and as such, deaths were procured.
“We have noted, with regret, violence that has led to the destruction of public and private property and, unfortunately, nine deaths in Dakar and Ziguinchor,” Interior Minister Antoine Diome said on national television on Friday.Sonko, 48, did not attend the hearing over an alleged sexual assault in which he was accused of raping a woman who worked in a massage parlor in 2021, when she was 20, and making death threats against her. He denied wrongdoing and said the charges were politically motivated source.
