Wake up to your responsibility

We all started off in life, being solely the responsibility of another person or a group of persons.

These people were either our parents or guardians.

In more than one occasion, we did spit out the food we were given, because it wasn't tasty enough for us. We'd rather wear a frown than wear the dress that was given to us.

Didn't we drag our feet because we did not want to go to a place we were about to be taken to?

It appeared as though we had a better school, a better church and a better holiday's location in mind.

We were perpetually vexed in our spirit that our parents took us to the places they deemed fit.

It looked like, we figured out just the kind of food, clothes, and locations that would have been be perfect for us.

We acted like we knew what was best for us.

Maybe we were right. Maybe we actually knew what was best for us.

But how right or wrong we were, is the least of my concern right now

And I don't think that it should concern either.

That's because, for many of us, fate, in its fickleness, has rolled away such an era and it will eventually do same for everyone.

Whatever epithet you'd like to award such an era_heaven or hell, it doesn't matter much, it's all over for some of us, and it would be over for all of us in due course.

A good number of us have gotten to the stage where we can't conveniently blame someone else for the outcome of our life.

We have gotten to the stage of responsibility. And responsibility comes with accountability

Our upkeep was once another's responsibility, but now, we are vested with the responsibility of looking out for ourselves.

It's sad that some of us are yet to wake up to this reality.

Many of us; young adult especially, are still dreaming, as we keep on blaming everything and everyone for the outcome of our lives.

It's quite convenient to blame others. I get it. It's the easiest thing to do. But the downside of such action is that, it wouldn't change a thing.

Your woes, which you blame on friends and foes wouldn't be averted, because you groaned.

Castigate your parents for all your problem, curse your government for your lack of productiveness, attribute your setbacks to your environment and lack of opportunity, excuse your bad habits on the premise of stereotype and zodiac sign etc.

Some or even all of your excuses might be valid. I'm not disputing that fact.

But one thing is certain. Year in year out, the same misery will keep staring you in the face until you choose to do something about it.

Adulthood is the stage of responsibility and accountability.

If you're busy adding years to life, without developing a strong sense of responsibility, then your are still dreaming. You're yet to wake up reality.

Wake up. Take responsibility for your life. Be accountable.

You might not have control over everything, but you can always work your way around things.

I'm talking to you and also talking to myself.

Today is my birthday.

I'm going deeper into the seas of adulthood.

It will be a time of sober reflection for me.

Now that I'm responsible for myself, how well have I been to do things I ought to do myself?

I once blamed people for not properly giving me the kind of life I thought I deserved. Now the ball is in my court. How well have I been able to do that for myself?

Like I said earlier. It's my
birthday.

It will be kind of you, if you'll spare some seconds to say a prayer for me.
